Mission

Our mission is to build equitable housing and mentor families to grow healthy homes and neighborhoods.

Background

The National Alliance of Pan African Seminarians (NAPAS), was founded in 1979 through support of notable doctoral scholars at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Since initial inception, these scholars created independent chapters across the country, serving organization such as the Congress of National Black Churches, Fortune 500 foundations, community groups as well as university and theological seminaries of Ivy League campuses and others.

NAPAS seeks to foster the holistic development of communities, corporations, couples, congregations and seminarians by affirming cultural identity, cultivating professional skills and facilitating interaction with peers and mentors.

The NAPAS - Nashville Chapter is one such chapter. Our chapter has executed award-winning workshops, lectures, capacity building programs, community development projects and publications reaching the Americas, Africa and Europe. We have managed programs and infrastructure with values as high as $200 million dollars that have served thousands of women, men and children

Impact

Expanded by 250% attendance, customer satisfaction and revenue growth with low overhead. Realized 60% increase in positive social behaviors, job and leadership skills.

collecting funds through grant-making, pledges and fundraisers; strengthen capacities through forging collaborations between volunteers, non-profit and for-profit entities; securing non-profit funding over $1 million; developed processes for a non-profit to pass a federal budget audit; expanding minority business participation; building houses, roads, bridges, apartments, schools, stadiums...

Needs

A housing report from Nashville Davidson county housing fund cites the need for affordable housing. Many residents are paying more than 30 percent of their income on housing costs alone, not including costs related to transportation or utilities. Nearly one out of four Nashville homeowners is cost-burdened, meaning they are paying more than 30 percent of their income
on housing. Almost half of our renters are cost-burdened, including more than 70 percent of low-income renters.

Housing issues create family stressors that often lead to abuse. A report issued by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations notes the on-going need for raising awareness about the issue of domestic family violence. The Tennessean reported that between March 1 and 30, 2020, calls to the domestic violence hotline operated by the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee increased by 31% over the same period last year.

There is a need for assistance and education on securing and maintaining a healthy home. In order to meet this need, we propose a program that will build homes as well as provide behavioral health training on identifying domestic abuse, assertive communication, and self-reliance.

Board Chair Statement

The mission of empowering neighborhoods with families, youth and children continues to speak to my heart. We strive for continuous improvement through: 1) increasing by 40 percent our market exposure; 2) expanding by 20 percent diversity of funding; and 3) increasing by 40 percent our collaboration partnerships.
