| Mary's Experience: President Mary Harris also serves as CEO and Executive Director of the Wilson County Black History Committee (WCBHC) without paid compensation. She has volunteered with the WCBHC since the 1990s, when she was one of the original organizers. Ms. Harris has been with WCBHC through its inception in 2003 as chartered by the State of Tennessee, and its formation in 2005 as a nonprofit when the IRS awarded its 501(c)3 tax-exempt status. Mrs. Harris is a respected leader in the community, and has guided the acquisition of Pickett Chapel since it was rescued in 2007 from near-demolition by the nonprofit WCBHC. Once fully operational, Pickett Chapel will ultimately serve as the permanent facility for the museum for the education, events, and exhibits. Ms. Harris also researched and recorded with other WCBHC members the history of African Americans from the founding of Wilson County in 1799 to the present for the book, "In Their Own Voices.: An Account of the Presence of African Americans in Wilson County" After this volume was published in 1999, Ms. Harris and other volunteers also operated the Roy Bailey African American History Center & Museum beginning in 2004 with limited hours on Main Street in Lebanon. WCBHC later placed those displays in storage until the new Annex was opened on June 18, 2022, and they will be updated for Pickett Chapel during its restoration. |
