Mission
JAZZY 88 strives to provide high-quality programming which is both educational and entertaining. Serving the Metropolitan Nashville area with information the general public can use in their daily lives.
Background
FCC licensed Educational since 1973. WFSK is Nashville's first FM licensed African American owned and operated radio station on the dial.
Impact
WFSK (formerly WRFN) has been a long-time voice to the community and voice for the voiceless in the community. Historically, there was no place for North Nashville residents to let their thoughts and feelings be heard and nurtured to a larger audience. From the station's early days, WFSK was the only place on the FM dial to hear about marches, rallies, protests, speakers and faith based events on civil rights, voting rights, equal rights, in a "free to speak" atmosphere. It was the student-estibalished place where future leaders could express themselves through poetry, news, sports, talk and of course the music.
Much Black History was made during that period. WFSK is the first radio station in Nashville to have jazz as a part of the music format as the students brought their music from home to play and talk about. Black radio was very limited in Nashville and was offering R&B and Soul music. One other station on the AM was all the community had to become informed on issues of concern or hear from other African Americans.
WFSK's moniker JAZZY88 speaks to our commitment to our jazz music format roots and is truly Nashville's Jazz Station. Nashville's Smooth & Contemporary jazz lovers have a place to continue to hear the latest news and releases from their favorite recording artists while educating others on the genre.
