Description
Our process starts with an in-depth evaluation that assesses work history, technical skills, living situations, and identifies other barriers to employment. After an in-person orientation and a one-on-one meeting with a job coach, clients are matched with an employer and placed in a job within 48-72 hours. Through partnerships with public transportation, Uber, and Enterprise Rideshare, we provide clients transportation to and from work. The First Step team also coordinates closely with other nonprofits to connect clients to other community resources and services such as housing placements, mental health services, food, and clothing needs, and more, that they need to develop a stable path out of poverty and homelessness.
As clients are placed into employment, First Step job coaches provide ongoing support, addressing any issues that might arise, teaching soft skills while the individual works various assignments, and connecting clients to other services.

Long-term Success
First Step staffing was founded in Atlanta in 2007. We expanded into 5 additional cities, including Nashville, between 2015 and 2020. We launched operations in Nashville in 2017. From 2017-2020 we were co-located with the Nashville Mission. In 2020, we moved into our own office on Gallatin Avenue.
Short-term Success
Since our launch in Nashville, we have empowered more than 2,000 men and women on the path out of homelessness and poverty. We have also expanded our customer base from a single customer to more than a dozen. In the last six months, one of our largest customers permanently hired 85 of First Steps clients into full-time employment.
Program Success Monitored By
First Step uses a comprehensive model to measure progress and impact. We track our clients from the application, employment, and retention over a 30, 60, 90, and 180- day period. Through this process within that timeframe, our clients strengthen their skills, and oftentimes, transition into a permanent position with our customers. We continue to track our clients to provide that extended support and resource should it be needed. Our Director of Systems and Training and frontline staff utilize TempWorks to track all clients. This database allows us to track retention, employment, training, wage scales, and other metrics that allow us to provide adequate resources to our clients. Job coaches are instrumental in this data collection, as they also include qualitative data within the system, including text-based surveys to our clients. With this data First Step can work with our community partners to identify our contribution to reducing homelessness and recidivism.
