CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

The Mid South Liver Alliance is moving forward and has survived being in existence for over 3 years. We have worked hard to build a strong non-profit that helps raise awareness and education on chronic liver disease. 2021 was a challenging year to start a nonprofit, especially a health-based nonprofit during the COVID era.
Our Medical Advisory Board was built in 2021 and consisted of 8 of the 11 transplant centers in our region (6 states). We got everyone on board to understand our mission and help us to put together some great programs to educate professionals and patients. The Healthcare system is broken and working together allows us to target and help to get the awareness and information out on chronic liver disease.
In 2024, we discussed and decided to focus on the patients. Working to build more awareness on MSLA and chronic liver disease we targeted 3 patient meetings within the first 6 months. We were happy to receive a Grant from The Community Foundation for helping us with the Nashville program. We had very successful meetings and it has allowed patients to know who we are and to help start directing other patients our way. We held 3 meetings in Memphis, Nashville, and Birmingham and reached over 100 patients between the three patient meetings. We also have the meetings on video, so we are putting them on our website to reach more patients as my patients involved in the meetings help me to get the word out. We were building a grassroots opportunity to continue to build awareness and educate more people on the importance of understanding their liver.
We also just finished our 2nd Building Bridges: Viral Hepatitis Summit in Pittsburgh with Community Liver Alliance. Working with CLA has been a great experience and has helped to get more awareness of the MSLA to the Hepatitis community. Being a one-person shop, this event allows me to make connections with some of our major grassroots harm reduction providers who are doing great work in our area as well as throughout the US.
We are still looking for board members from each of our regions which include: TN, MS, AL, AR, LA, and KY. If you are interested in hearing more please contact me.
We are working on more collaborative efforts in working with other liver foundations on grant opportunities . I am working with Global Liver Institute out or Washington on educating patients for advocacy opportunities in each their states as well as at the federal level. We also hope to work more with AASLD on education and awareness building for patients and caregivers.
If you have liver disease and want to discuss how you might be able to help us educate and build awareness of the disease, please contact me.

In 2023, financial details compiled from Form 990EZ. Form 990EZ prepared internally by nonprofit.

Prior to 2023, this organization filed a Form 990N with the IRS, which does not provide specific financial information. Most small tax-exempt organizations whose annual gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less are required to electronically submit Form 990N, also known as an e-Postcard, unless they choose to file a complete Form 990 or Form 990EZ instead.
