Mission

Our mission is to empower and inspire victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. To provide comprehensive services so that survivors can prosper in their mental health, wellness, and enhance and cultivate new skills.

Background

Break Away is a nonprofit that was established on September 22, 2021 and is located on 523 Church St. in Nashville, Tennessee.Break Away utilizes three primary interventions and one prevention component: Mental Health, Fitness/Wellness, Skill and Enhancement, and Daycare services.

Although Break Away has four components, the first component we are looking to focus on is mental health. The psychological impact of domestic violence and sexual abuse can be detrimental. Psychological abuse exacerbates the pain of physical and sexual assault, and several studies have shown that psychological abuse causes long-term mental health harm to a victim. Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal thoughts, low self-esteem, and difficulties trusting people are common symptoms of psychological abuse.

Impact

Sexual and domestic violence programs shall be designed to meet the needs of our targeted counties with a focus on individuals that have been historically underserved. Underserved populations include groups that lack accessible or relevant services due to geographic locations, racial/or ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation, or specific needs like language, disabilities, immigration status, or age.

Needs

❖ 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe, intimate partner, physical violence, intimate partner contacts sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, use of victim services, contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, etc.3
❖ Studies suggest that there is a relationship between intimate partner violence and depression and suicidal behavior.4
❖ The economic impact of mental illness in the United States is substantial - more than $400 billion annually5
❖ 65% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner violence; 96% of the victims of these crimes are female.6
