Mission
The mission of the Andrew Jackson Foundation is to preserve the home place of Andrew Jackson, create learning opportunities, and inspire citizenship through experiencing the life and unique impact of Jackson.
Background
In 1889, the Ladies' Hermitage Association (renamed the Andrew Jackson Foundation in 2014) was founded to protect and preserve the home of our nation's 7th President. Born to immigrant parents on the frontier, a prisoner of war, and orphaned at age fourteen, Andrew Jackson embodies the American spirit that one's past does not dictate one's future. As a General of the United States Army, Jackson led his troops to a stunning victory against the British military at the Battle of New Orleans. As president he solidified the Union, eliminated the national debt and presided over an era that saw immense changes in the nation. Andrew Jackson's role in the removal of Native Americans, and his ownership of more than 300 enslaved individuals is also a part of his legacy. The Andrew Jackson Foundation is committed to presenting the full story of Jackson as an integral part of the story of our nation. Celebrating 132 years since its opening to the public, The Hermitage is shared with hundreds of thousands of visitors each year from around the world. The Hermitage is the third most-visited presidential home in the United States, last year reaching more than 237,000 guests including 32,000 children. Today, The Hermitage consists of 27 historic structures, including Jacksons original farmhouse, Greek-Revival mansion and tomb, enslaved cabins and related archaeological sites. Collectively, these structures provide great insight and inspiration as today's citizens and future American leaders experience the lives of President Jackson, his family and the enslaved as well as discover the emerging principles of American democracy in the Jacksonian Era.
Impact
The challenges presented in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have created opportunities for the Andrew Jackson Foundation to adapt and create new experiences that will make an impact and grow our organizational footprint into the future. Our digital presence greatly expanded to present virtual visits and weekly online interviews with subject matter experts. A new grounds-pass ticket was introduced to serve a need in our local community and guests interested in a quick visit. Site-wide safety resources were implemented to ensure a safe return for guests. Our development and marketing personnel refocused efforts to build awareness of our financial need and secure much-needed donations.
Our most important goals for the upcoming year are: Continued financial recovery stemmed from the pandemic; Continued diligence in the care and acquisition of the Hermitage collection, in which over 95% is original to the Jackson and Donelson households; Increasing our presence in the community with the expansion of public events and programming to gain support, emphasizing strategic partnerships with other organizations and increased sponsorship opportunities; Ensuring that Andrew Jackson's Hermitage is a national center for experiencing the life and legacy of Andrew Jackson as well as learning, outreach, and scholarship about Jackson and Jacksonian America.
Needs
The Foundation's most pressing needs include funding to continue meeting our mission to preserve and educate the public on the life and legacy of Andrew Jackson as we continue as stewards of the 1,120-acre National Historic Landmark.
CEO Statement
Andrew Jackson's Hermitage is one of the oldest and best preserved presidential homes in America. This National Historic Landmark exists today thanks to a determined and resourceful group of Nashvillians who, in 1889, founded the Andrew Jackson Foundation to protect, preserve, and interpret The Hermitage as a place to experience and consider the life, times and impact of Andrew Jackson on our nation. Jackson, a pioneer, entrepreneur, military leader, politician, 7th United States President, and national hero, "Converted the Founders' Republic to a democracy". (Time; 7 February 2011) The generosity of donors, foundations, and guests enables us to offer an outstanding visitor experience to a broad and diverse audience of all ages. I hope you will make an opportunity to visit The Hermitage - come for the history and leave inspired. It is truly a national treasure here in Nashville.
