Description
THEI's Housing Network is a growing, trauma-informed reentry housing initiative, offering safe, supportive environments for individuals transitioning from incarceration. Ogburn House, the first in this network, opened in January 2024 within Nashville's historic Scarritt Bennett Center and focuses on educational empowerment, personal growth, and autonomy for residents. In September 2024, Busby House became THEI's first TDOC-approved housing site, located in South Inglewood, Nashville. It offers structured assistance and community connections to support stable reentry and personal development. The recently established Doochin House provides a safe space for women navigating unique challenges in reentry, including family reunification and overcoming stigma. Together, THEI's Housing Network provides residents with the support and resources to rebuild their lives with purpose, stability, and independence.

THEI's Policy & Practice portfolio drives transformative change at state and national levels, amplifying the voices of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals to reshape policies that foster equity and dismantle systemic barriers. Through strategic collaboration with the Tennessee Prison College Coalition (TPCC), we expand access to quality, equitable educational programs for justice-impacted students. Our annual Day on the Hill events are pivotal moments of advocacy, where THEI staff and alumni engage directly with legislators, sharing the powerful impact of higher education in prison and advancing policy changes to support justice-impacted individuals.

In partnership with Lane College, THEI proudly helps coordinate a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration at Northwest Correctional Complex (NWCX) in West Tennessee. Launched in Summer 2021, this groundbreaking program made history when its inaugural cohort graduated in November 2023, becoming the first class of six men to earn bachelor's degrees behind prison walls at a Historically Black College in Tennessee. This achievement not only highlights the potential of incarcerated scholars but also signifies a monumental step forward in prison education-establishing Tennessee's first HBCU program within a correctional facility. The second cohort graduated in October 2024, further solidifying the transformative impact of this partnership and inspiring future generations of justice-impacted individuals.
