Description
Musician Partners audition and attend an orientation session. Then we schedule them and offer them stipends to facilitate one-hour programs, each curated to fit the tastes and needs of the individual senior groups we serve. Participants are encouraged to sing and clap along, make requests, participate by playing along on percussion instruments and move to the music. Sometimes they are inspired to dance, seated or not! Outreach now serves groups at 120 locations across 9 Middle Tennessee counties in recreational and care settings (public and private centers, skilled nursing and adult day services providers, churches and synagogues, independent and assisted living communities and dementia care). Specialized "Music Making Outreach Sessions" are facilitated by Musician Partners (MPs) trained by our Program Manager Matt Bridges who is a certified percussion facilitator through REMO's Health Rhythms. MPs are provided with Music Making Kits containing a variety of hand-held percussion instruments which participants play together for spontaneous improvised rhythm and singing sessions.

In celebration of 10 years of operations we launched new programming in March, 2017, 'Music for Seniors Live Performance Learning Labs.' These inter-generational group music lessons occur at venues throughout our service area. Musician Partners who are qualified teaching artists experienced in working with all ages lead Learning Labs in Ukulele, Percussive Arts and Harmonica Performance. In 2018, we offered Folk Dance to Live Music, teaching traditional Eastern European folk dances. Learning Labs are multi-week series classes featuring an hour to 1.5 hours of active hands-on learning, with each session building upon what was learned in the prior session. All materials and 'loaner' instruments are provided. Older adult participants can be accompanied by a friend, caregiver or relative. This inter-generational approach is designed to accommodate those seniors who may require a younger individual to provide transportation or special care-giving needs. A granddaughter, son, caregiver or driver, for instance, is encouraged to stay and participate alongside their senior companion.

Music for Seniors produces a one hour FREE Daytime Concert Series for area seniors, their care partners, families and friends. So we feature a daytime concert every month, March through December. Elderly individuals are often unable to attend nighttime concerts scheduled for the general public, starting late and lengthy. Limited resources might prohibit purchasing expensive tickets, and many seniors do not drive at night. Limited mobility, and physical and cognitive challenges are also obstacles. Senior centers, residence communities and groups come together on vans, and independent older adults drive themselves to concerts strategically scheduled to conclude just before or to begin just after lunch. Many attendees plan a lunch outing providing a fun arts-filled day, and sometimes our hosts even provide a complimentary lunch. The concerts feature local artists of renown - soloists, ensembles and choral groups - performing a wide range of musical genres - from classical to bluegrass, R&B to swing, and everything in-between!

This is our organization's intentional and targeted effort to expand the inclusion of child, youth and student musicians (including groups and soloists, bands, orchestras, choirs, instrumentalists and vocalists) in our OUTREACH, CONCERT and LEARNING LABS programming. We also welcome children and youth into our audiences for our monthly public concerts. Students perform live music programs (up to one-hour in length) for senior audiences.When possible, performances are followed by short, informal "meet and greet" sessions, with students provided the opportunity to interact with the older adult participants. Benefits to student musicians include performance opportunities for very appreciative audiences; participation in significant community service; and opportunities to interact with area seniors. Benefits to seniors include expand daytime opportunities to participate in live music programming; opportunity to hear/see young musicians; and opportunities to interact with students. Music for Seniors is passionate about this inter-generational initiative, connecting generations through live music programming. Our senior population is growing at a rapid pace. In addition to providing expanded opportunities for our area's young musicians to hone their skills and talents, we hope it will also raise community awareness regarding the value of our elders, the challenges they face and some of their special needs. It also expands arts opportunities for older adults and connects these two groups of individuals - young musicians and seniors - whose lives otherwise might not intersect.

Older adults face challenges on many levels. This sometimes makes it difficult for them to enjoy our community's arts offerings. Often resources are limited. Many live on fixed incomes. Many no longer drive and, if they do, not at night. So offering seniors opportunities to purchase deeply discounted tickets to public arts events of all kinds, including specially-scheduled daytime events, greatly increases the likelihood that they have access to the rich public arts programming in our area. Our staff lobbies other arts providers to consider offering specially priced and specially scheduled programming to accommodate the needs of seniors. While not a traditional program in the strictest sense, it merits mentioning that this advocacy is an ongoing and important component of our efforts, as we strive to make arts experiences affordable, accessible and available to our entire community, including underserved older adults.
