Description
Project SAR is designed to enhance the services of our rural area search and rescue programs. Our Rescue Squad has a critical need to enhance our wilderness search and rescue, and disaster preparedness efforts. Each year more and more people are traveling to Cannon County for recreational activities such as horseback riding, rappelling, and rock climbing. This means that we are responding to an ever-increasing number of search/rescue missions and mountain rescue emergencies. With an increase in road traffic and outdoor recreation activities, unfortunately our call volumes (i.e. emergency responses) have increased. We also have a critical need to acquire a Rescue Boat. We need to add more training for responders and add water rescue equipment to our services. We are the weak link for the region's overall response to water emergencies and recovery. Many of our mutual aid partners have these types of Rescue Boats, and they are designed to work together in teams.

This specific equipment will be a welcomed addition to the organization's existing equipment, and will be utilized to augment the existing equipment that is owned and operated by this organization. Extrication equipment will be utilized to respond to natural and man-made disasters both of terror and non-terror related events. Additional Extrication/Rescue equipment will only serve to strengthen the organization as a whole. With the addition of rescue equipment it will allow the organization to prepare to handle major events now and in the future. This equipment will also allow the organization to operate more effectively, and it will certainty decrease the amount of death and disability which maybe suffered by the citizens we protect.

We are forced to park equipment outside, which causes damage to the equipment over time. Currently our only station is located in the County Seat of Woodbury. Having a sub-station would allow our Squad to strategically locate emergency rescue equipment throughout our County. This would allow our Squad to respond more efficiently within our own County, and it would allow us to respond quicker to our neighboring communities.Also, by sub-stationing rescue equipment in the communities, it would allow us to separate our equipment and not run the risk of complete destruction of all of our equipment during a natural disaster such as a tornado or fire at our primary building.

| "Julian S. Wise of Roanoke, VA is known and honored as the 'Father of Rescue Squads.' It all goes back to 1928 when he had witnessed a number of emergencies, particularly the drowning of a small boy in the Roanoke River. In discussing the situation with his wife, he found more than encouragement. In fact, he credits her with the idea which has grown to international proportions since he organized the famed Roanoke Life Saving and First Aid Crew (the first in the world) in May 1928. He helped organize many of the first squads in Tennessee." (www.tnars.org) The Executive Officers and volunteer Responders of the Cannon County Rescue Squad, Inc. are very proud to have served the citizens of Cannon County and Middle Tennessee since 1978. We will be serving our community for many years to come by planning for the future. As the Unit Director/Chief Operating Officer, I would like to thank the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee for helping us to become better organized and to acquire funding to further our life saving work.
