Description
NALC serves two types of learners - adults who read or comprehend at less than an eighth grade proficiency and adult immigrants who have limited English skills. We provide our learners with a safe place to learn and grow. We recognize that not everyone learns in the same way or wants the same things. This is why we offer one-on-one tutoring in addition to classroom instruction, so each learner gets the attention needed for success. We also offer self-paced computer programs. We currently have hundreds of students waiting for services at NALC.
Program Successes
Each year NALC serves hundreds of adult learners, most of whom improve literacy levels on standardized tests or achieve personal goals, like improving at work, at home, or in their child's school.
As an example of student success, Clifton had enrolled in different English classes over the years, but he felt embarrassed and always gave up. He came to NALC, and over four years, he worked with his personal tutor to learn to read and improve his English. He has had an impressive list of accomplishments. He can now read street signs and error messages when his car malfunctions. He got a library card and checks out books from the Nashville Public Library. He went to a homebuyers' class and bought a house. He then enrolled in a citizenship class, even though he had dropped out previously because he thought he'd never be able to pass the test. Clifton became a U.S. citizen!

Adult literacy rates impact every part of Nashville: employment and poverty levels, healthcare costs, K-12 school performance, family and community relationships, and general dependence on systems for support. NALC offers multi-generational independence through literacy.
Program Success Monitored By
For all of our programs, we measure the number of learners served and their instructional hours. In addition, standardized tests and other diagnostic tools are administered upon enrollment and again after every six months of instruction or at the end of a class session, whichever is sooner. These include, but are not limited to, the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT), CASAS Prep Tests, and curriculum-based assessment tests. In addition, we collect data from teachers and tutors about personal goals achieved because of increased literacy skills, like earning a job promotion.
Our lesson plans and materials are adapted to each person's goals so they can experience the difference that learning new skills makes in their day-to-day lives. Whether it's working toward getting a driver's license, earning U.S. citizenship, or writing a love letter to a spouse for the first time, we value and prioritize each individual's learning needs.
