In Rutherford County alone, there are approximately 3,500 persons with Alzheimer's or a related dementia. [Population numbers previously calculated from the 2010 Data Set of the American Community Survey for Demographic and Housing Estimates in the application section "Community Impacted by Your Project"] http://www.alz.org/documents_custom/report_alzfactsfigures2010.pdf Outcome data in a previous section demonstrates positive health results of the use of Mindful Care ADS in our family caregivers. It has been documented that delaying nursing home admission for one person by 1.5 years saves $100,000. That savings is not just for the family, but also for taxpayers who might have to carry the load. Mindful Care has enabled many caregivers to get the relief they needed. By having most of our participants not enter the nursing home until medically necessary, Mindful Care has saved families and the Medicaid program hundreds of thousands of dollars (at a minimum). Without the Elders First program, many family members would have to quit their jobs to care for their loved ones; use more expensive home-care options; or admit their loved ones into costly nursing home care. Our program enhances quality of life for the families as well as reducing the financial impact of the care, allowing elders to remain at home as long as possible. An ongoing challenge for us is that people generally fear the word and the disease, Alzheimer's. It is difficult to attract volunteers for that reason. Some family members are embarrassed that they have a loved one in the program and try to keep it undercover. Thus, when you need a caregiver to speak to others on our behalf, often they are reticent to do so. Fear and embarrassment (even denial) are two of our high hurdles.
