Mission

New Leash on Life is dedicated to improving the welfare of companion animals in our community through shelter, placement, spay/neuter, education and awareness.

Background

New Leash on Life (NLOL) was formed in July 1978 under the original name, the Humane Association of Wilson County, by a group of caring individuals dedicated to end the suffering of abandoned and unwanted pets in Wilson County. Our first meeting was attended by community members interested in the same mission. Those who gathered confessed to feeling helpless to aid in the cause of ameliorating animal suffering and homelessness. There were no resources and no place for homeless animals to be sheltered. In October 1978, we became incorporated and began our goal of obtaining funds to build an animal shelter. Our 501(c) 3 status was granted on May 28, 1980. In late 1982, our first successful capital campaign was launched, and in July 1983 we opened our current adoption center. We have faithfully served the community since then, providing homes to thousands of pets. In 2009 New Leash on Life made the significant step of adopting no-kill sheltering practices. This decision was not made lightly, and there were many carefully planned steps involved in making this transition. We are very proud of our 95% adoption rate. More information can be found at: http://www.newleashonline.org/articles/what_does_it_mean_to_be_no_kill Recognizing the importance of spay/neuter in solving pet overpopulation and homelessness, we began operating the first mobile spay/neuter clinic in Tennessee in 2000. The Spay Station provides spay/neuter services to qualified low-income pet caretakers in rural Tennessee who might otherwise be unable to afford these services. We provide these services at no cost to the pet caretaker. In 2003 we started Snip & Tip, a trap/neuter/return program for feral and free-roaming cats. And in 2008, we opened the doors of Fix For Life, a low-cost, high-quality Humane Alliance-model spay/neuter clinic. By 2003 it became apparent that the structure, size and aging condition of our Adoption Center hindered our ability to meet the demand and health of our animals. Over the next few years, research and planning efforts led to the development of a strategic plan, which included the hire of an executive director and the formation of a timeline for the completion of a capital campaign. We are not affiliated with animal control in Wilson County and do not serve simply as an animal shelter. New Leash on Life is an animal welfare organization which offers a wide range of programs that benefit both companion animals and residents in the area.

Impact

New Leash on Life maintains a limited intake animal shelter, a low cost spay/neuter clinic and a pet food assistance program. Our animal shelter houses homeless cats and dogs. All of our animals are spay or neutered before adoption, have been microchipped and receive age appropriate vaccinations. Our spay/neuter clinic known as The JOY Clinic. In the past twelve months, we have provided over 5,000 spay/neuter surgeries. Our pet food assistance program assists 300 animals a month. This program provides once a month pet food assistance to assure loved pets can stay with their family. We are striving to help more pets find their forever homes, to spay/neuter more animals and support more families in need as resources allow.

Needs

During The Big Payback, we are asking you to help us with our BIGGEST NEED, a New to us van with rear air conditioning. If you can help, your contribution towards this need will mean we can continue to pick up animals in need when their family is no longer to able to care for them, transport animals to veterinary appointments and continue to take animals to adoption events.
Ongoing New Leash on Life needs funds to support our spay/neuter and adoption/sheltering programs. We are seeking grants and individuals to help fund these programs. Funds are used for many things including vet care during emergencies, basic medical care (testing, vaccinations, feeding, etc.) , daily care, spay/neuter assistance and our ever growing pantry program.

CEO Statement

New Leash on Life is an organization dedicated to the welfare of companion animals in Middle Tennessee. Our dream is for a future where there are no unwanted, unloved or abandoned dogs and cats. In order to help make this dream a reality, we have dedicated our resources to sheltering and adoption of animals who are homeless, spay/neuter services and offering resources to pet owners in need to help them keep their beloved pets. Although we are located in Wilson County we work collaboratively in many outlying counties extending our expertise and services to help the greater Middle TN humane effort. New Leash on Life has over 30 years of history committing itself to helping our community understand and fulfill its responsibility to the protection and compassionate care of companion animals.

Board Chair Statement

The JOY Clinic, our new spay/neuter clinic made possible by the generous donation of Joy Bishop, will allow us to serve more animals in need. With the brick and mortar facility, we have been able to serve large dogs and spay or neuter 30+ animals daily. Our hope is to make improvements in our shelter facility next. The facility is 40 years old and needs a lot of work. We'd like to expand the building to include indoor/outdoor runs for the dogs and add a dog hold area and a parvo room. Also, we'd like to add a kitten room and have a space for group play for the dogs, meetings with potential adopters and indoor enrichment space. Though our shelter facility is outdated, we plan to remodel the current space and add onto the existing building to offer more to the animals in our care.
