Mission
ALC Mission Statement:
• To promote public awareness of the need for literacy education in the Clarksville-Montgomery County-Fort Campbell, KY communities
• To recruit students who are under-educated in basic reading and computation skills and persons with English as a second language
• To recruit and train tutors who are interested in teaching adults with low reading and computation skills
• To assist adults whose reading, comprehension and/or math skills are below the 7th-grade level
• To obtain and allocate funds for the local adult literacy program
Background
The Clarksville-Montgomery County Adult Literacy Council (ALC) was established in 1985 as a non-profit organization. ALC provides its tutorial services in the Clarksville-Montgomery County/Fort Campbell, KY communities.
The Literacy4LIFE tutorial program provides free year-round tutorial services to adult learners who are determined to improve their levels of literacy or obtain their high school equivalency diploma or improve their personal educational skills or qualify for entering employment in their career choice and/or to improve their personal digital literacy skills. The Literacy4LIFE tutorial program encourages and educates adult learners of all ages in our community to enable positive changes for successful life outcomes.
The Literacy4LIFE 2023 Tutorial Program provides the following services:
-HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) Preparation Tutorial Service
-Digital Literacy (Computer Lab) for Senior Citizens Tutorial Service
-The TABE (Test for Adult Basic Education) Tutorial Service
-(Phonic) Illiterate & Comprehensive Reading Tutorial Service
-The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Tutorial Service
-Prep for Citizenship Class & Application Compliance Tutorial Service
- Conversational English Practical Application Tutorial Service
Impact
Currently, ALC provides one tutorial program named Literacy4LIFE. The Literacy4LIFE 2023 tutorial program provides the following services:
-HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) Preparation Tutorial Service

- Conversational English Practical Application Tutorial Service
The Prep for Citizenship Class offers civic and literacy education to foreign adult learners who are interested in becoming a citizen of the United States. This service provides 10-week classes four times per year which include fall, winter, spring, and summer classes. During the semester, each foreigner is assigned a volunteer tutor to assist in filling out their N-400 Application for Naturalization Form. At the end of the semester, each adult learner is awarded a $65 scholarship toward their $725 application fee. For accurate results, each adult learner is encouraged to submit their completed N-400 Application for Naturalization Form to be processed for their interview.
The 2022 Fall Citizenship Class has already received confirmation to attend an interview in Nashville, TN in March. The 2023 Spring Citizenship Class will finish on March 16th and will receive confirmation approximately in June. Literacy4LIFE is the only tutorial program that provides this service in our area!
Needs
#1. Finances to continue to provide free educational materials for the Literacy4Life Tutorial Program's services.
#2. ALC is in need of volunteer math and reading tutors.
