Mission

To provide hot nourishing meals and friendship to any person over 60 as well as those under 60 who are unable to prepare hot meals for themselves due to extended illness such as being released from the hospital or taking chemotherapy . The nutritious meals and a friendly visit help home bound persons maintain dignity, restore and/or continue good health and allow them to live in their homes, where they want to be, as long as they choose.

Background

Home Bound Meals Program (HBMP) was founded in 1982 to serve the elderly population of Hendersonville. The program has grown dramatically since its founding. In 1982, the average number of meals served each day was 17. In 2022 the program averaged serving 140 meals daily. Meals are prepared and delivered 5 days a week. The program has expanded over time to include providing some of assistance to the client in the areas of transportation and networking to meet home repairs of the client. HBMP has the exclusive rights to serve the eligible Meals on Wheels population in the 37075 zip code and surrounding area. We also deliver frozen meals by-weekly to clients in rural areas outside the 37075 zip code. The HBMP works with the Mid-Cumberland Human Resource Agency (MCHRA) as a partner in the daily operation of the program. MCHRA manages the contract that HBMP purchases the food from. HBMP purchases the food in bulk and provides the volunteers for the daily operation of the program. Volunteers prepare the individual meals and deliver the food to those individuals who are determined to be eligible by MCHRA. Home Bound Meals Program is responsible for all funding of cost related to preparing the meals. Donations come from individuals, businesses, local churches, civic groups, and various grants including The Memorial Foundation and the City of Hendersonville. Some recipients contribute according to ability to contribute but no recipient is required to contribute. All are served regardless of economic status. HBMP is a non discriminatory organization.

Impact

The Home Bound Meals Program's(HBMP) is an all volunteer organization. The goals are to provide a nutritious meal to as many people as are eligible in the 37075 zip code (Hendersonville) and the surrounding area and maintain a steady dependable volunteer base to prepare the meals, and to deliver them. The delivery of the meal is used as a key to unlocking the doorway to develop a friendship with the recipient and provide some comfort to busy families that someone is checking on their loved one. We are always evaluating our fundraising process to insure our fundraising is effective in meeting the budgetary demand for the program. We strive to be good stewards of the program in making wise decisions to provide funding adequate to support the purchase of the meals.
