Mission

Centerstone has evolved significantly over our 68-year history. We've expanded our services, our geography, and our partnerships and affiliations - all to serve people and families in our communities. While our organization has changed and expanded, our singular focus on delivering care that changes people's lives has not; it's our noble purpose - our mission - that drives us each and every day.

Gifts to Centerstone provide tremendous opportunity in the lives of children, youth, adults and families seeking a path to wellness, ensuring access to care regardless of medical coverage. Our donors and funders help advance care and health outcomes for individuals and families who are experiencing mental health and substance use issues. Funding also provides direct support for key clinical initiatives, including advancing evidence-based treatments into our care.

Working with individual donors, businesses and grant-making organizations, Centerstone's Foundation works tirelessly to ensure life-changing care is accessible to the children, adults, and families who need it most. By cultivating meaningful relationships, and through good financial stewardship, our Foundation amplifies charitable gifts made to Centerstone, making certain we have the maximum impact on those we serve.

Background

Centerstone is a nonprofit health system providing mental health and substance use disorder treatment. Services are available nationally through the operation of outpatient clinics, residential programs, the use of telehealth, and an inpatient hospital. Centerstone also features specialized programs for the military community, therapeutic foster care, children's services, and employee assistance programs. Centerstone's Research Institute provides guidance through research and technology, leveraging the best practices for use in all our communities. Centerstone's Foundation secures philanthropic resources to support the work and mission of delivering care that changes people's lives.

Centerstone serves over 107,000 individuals throughout our locations and nationwide through our clinical network. We maintain a clinical, professional, and administrative workforce of approximately 3,100 employees, with hundreds of volunteers supporting the Centerstone mission through their work. All facilities of Centerstone that provide mental healthcare, substance abuse, and other health-related services are state-licensed and accredited by CARF or JCAHO.

Impact

Community is at the heart and soul of Centerstone. Through our continuum of mental health and substance use disorder treatments, our team serves more than 107,000 people each year across the country and the globe. With residential facilities, outpatient clinics, over 750 school partnerships, an inpatient behavioral hospital, addiction and recovery centers, and the use of telehealth, we strive to meet the needs of people exactly where they are.

Centerstone also delivers services using a national network of over 1,200 contracted, licensed and credentialed providers - all military cultured trained. This is essential due to the cultural differences we see between the military and civilian population. Many of our providers are veterans themselves, are military spouses, have a parent that served, or are parents themselves of service members. This allows our providers to have a greater understanding of the cultural intricacies of the military as well as offers a unique viewpoint when examining trauma and moral injury when it presents in counseling sessions.

Centerstone is one of only a handful of community based behavioral healthcare providers that operates with its own Research Institute, composed of physicians, psychologists, scientists, educators, and industry experts who use science to advance the field of mental health and substance use treatment. By translating its research into meaningful and innovative daily clinical practice, Centerstone's Research Institute works to implement research-based strategies into real-world settings, thereby reducing the research-to-practice gap and increasing patient/client health outcomes. The team recently developed more than 100 clinical trainings on the use of telehealth and delivered them to Centerstone's entire clinical workforce. Examples of these trainings include "How to engage young children in telehealth" and "How to effectively assess suicidality in telehealth." Studies were also conducted on the effectiveness of mental health services delivered via telehealth, and in conjunction with Centerstone's national policy efforts, successfully advocated for bipartisan support to allow for the ongoing provision of telehealth, leading to significant policy changes at the national level.

In all areas served by Centerstone, individuals and families have access to high-quality, evidence-based treatment that addresses their specific needs.

Needs

There's no question, the need for mental health services is increasing here in Tennessee and throughout the nation. Gifts to Centerstone provide tremendous opportunity in the lives of children, youth, adults and families seeking a path to wellness, ensuring access to care, regardless of medical coverage.

A gift or grant to Centerstone will support:

Centerstone serving additional children and families through in-home counseling or care management support.

Advancing clinical care and client/patient outcomes through the work of our Research Institute, providing our clinical teams with the latest proven advancements in care for optimal patient recovery and wellness.

Veterans, active duty service members and their families with counseling, therapy and more, free of cost for those who have no insurance or limited resources.

Immediate support to patients/clients to help remove daily-life barriers, so that they are able to focus on their care plans, keeping the path open for optimal recovery.

And this year, during Mental Health Awareness Month, The Big Payback funds will support services in Tennessee, where we provide confidential, often no-cost support and mental health and substance use services to community members and families throughout the state.

CEO Statement

As an organization with a mission as big as delivering care that changes people's lives, everything we do is rooted in care, and access to care. And we can't change lives without the talent and expertise of our employees. Our dedicated team of 3,000+ professionals possess such immense talent, always working to deliver care no matter the circumstances or challenges that may lie in front of them. Diversity, equity and inclusion are also important to us. We believe having team members with diverse backgrounds and experiences enables us to better care for our patients/clients. We strive to create a workplace that reflects the world around us.

One of Centerstone's most notable feats since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has simply been maintaining essential care. In fact, we were able to increase the number of services delivered. We feel very fortunate to have benefitted from the unique opportunity to pilot new technologies and clinical approaches. The dramatic shift to telehealth has created enhanced access to care.

Our boards of directors and committed volunteers also work to advance access to care every day. Knowing that Centerstone was uniquely positioned to lead a national effort to preserve telehealth flexibilities, our boards and volunteers launched the One Hundred Champions. Immersing themselves in the complex features of telehealth, they connected with legislators and health staffers from both chambers of Congress and across the political spectrum. This highly successful campaign resulted in the continued authorization of telehealth and introduction of bipartisan legislation.

During this same time, Centerstone also joined a coalition of our colleagues and advocates in a landmark effort to designate a national three-digit dialing code (988) for mental health emergencies. As was true with 911, the 988 designation is a critical first step in building an accessible and responsive system to engage and treat people in psychiatric crisis. I am very proud of the role our volunteers and staff played - and continue to play - in this major step forward for individuals and families in crisis. We are proud to be one of our nation's partners in answering and responding to people nationwide, who reach out through the new 988 Crisis Lifeline.

Whether you are an old friend of ours, or have just learned about us, we hope you will be inspired by all of the things we are doing to deliver care that changes people's lives. - David C. Guth, Jr., CEO, Centerstone
