Description
Baptist Homes for Exceptional Persons purchased, built, and/or renovated three homes for developmentally disabled persons that were then donated to Tennessee Baptist Adult Homes for operation and management. Two eight-bed homes for men are located in Lebanon and one eight-bed home for women is in the Hermitage area of Nashville. These homes are currently serving twenty-two developmentally disabled adults where full and part time house managers provide supervision, meals, transportation, assistance with personal needs, and recreational activities. The enhancement of the quality of life is an overarching goal of this program. Developing life skills and pursuing personal interests are facilitated. The long tenure of residency plus the satisfaction expressed by the residents themselves and their families attest to the success of the program. Furthermore, we see the results of more mobility and social interaction as a result of living in these homes.

Description
Deer Lake Retirement Community is an independent living condominium community developed for adults 55 years of age and older. The campus of 135 one and two bedroom units is located in the Bellevue area of Nashville. There is also an activities building that houses the office, laundry room, game room, library, meeting space, and two guest rooms. The price of these condominium homes is very reasonable for the Nashville market. Tennessee Baptist Adult Homes has managed the community since 1987 at the conclusion of its development. This management service has helped keep the cost of monthly fees considerably lower than those of similar communities. Many of the residents have lived there fifteen years or longer. These long-time residents have 'aged-in-place'. Consequently, over time the average age of the residents has increased requiring greater attention and more help. The on-site manager and maintenance supervisor offer assistance for residents with needs.

Description
Special Friends Camp is held one week in July at Linden Valley Camp in Perry County (another week-long camp is held in East Tennessee) for 140 developmentally disabled persons. A staff to camper ratio of 1-3 allows even campers with more severe disabilities, including those limited to wheel chairs, to enjoy a traditional camp experience composed of learning, crafts, sports/recreation, music, puppets, swimming, and worship. The Special Friends Camp director has a tenure of eighteen years. The goals of the camp are to give campers a week of fun doing things typical of a children's camp that may not be available to them in their local setting and to provide caregivers a week of respite. A side effect of the camps is that several of the high school and college students who work at the camp go on to become special education teachers or work with developmentally disabled persons in residential or volunteer settings.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

The ongoing challenges faced by the programs and ministries of Tennessee Baptist Adult Homes are basically two. The first is the growing need/demand for the services we provide. The second, which impacts the first, is financial support sufficient to maintain existing programs and residences plus additional funding for further growth and development. The annual Father's Day Offering continues to grow each year. Though not at the rate hoped for, the Father's Day Offering growth is nearing the point where operational deficits will be covered, allowing us to be more assertive in making necessary improvements to our facilities in order to further improve the quality of life enjoyed by our residents.
