Description
The Renewal House Women's Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a gender-specific treatment and recovery program for women of low income with substance use disorders that is licensed by the State of Tennessee. All of the women have been living in poverty and many are homeless. In addition to substance use disorders, a majority of the women have a history of co-occurring mental health disorders. Domestic violence, childhood abuse, criminal justice system involvement, and loss of child custody rights are also common challenges for the clients. Helping women discover their strengths and identify their barriers to recovery, the IOP combines motivational interviewing with other processes proven effective in treating women, women-specific 12-Step processes, educational and therapeutic groups, case management, and transportation services.

Description
The Family Residential Program for mothers with substance use disorders and their children consists of intensive case management and wraparound services to support a family's healing and recovery. Renewal House has the capacity for 34 resident families at a time. Progress through the program depends on the mother's ability to sustain employment and parenting and maintain her household, all while practicing a program of recovery. Completing the four transitional housing program phases (Orientation, Renewal, Career Development, and Transitions) requires 6 - 15 months, based on a woman's assessed needs and individual progress. Once a woman moves her family to permanent housing, she continues to have access to an array of Renewal House services during the final 6-month program phase, New Beginnings, to help ensure continued family stability.

Renewal House offers safe, affordable housing in an alcohol- and drug-free living environment. The community is open to women with at least 6 months in recovery and their children. Monthly rent charges for the apartments are well below market rates for the Nashville area. Renters must demonstrate financial stability, be willing to have a background check and drug screen, sign a contract confirming that neither tenants nor guests will have drugs or alcohol on the property, and participate in community meetings on a regular basis. Renters will be subject to random drug screens. Shelter Plus Care and Section 8 are accepted. Apartments are convenient to Metro bus lines, grocery shopping and other amenities.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

A significant challenge for Renewal House is the overwhelming demand for the agency's unique services. To address the problem, Renewal House opened a new facility in June 2022 to double the agency's capacity of service to women and children. With three stories and more than 30,000 square feet of space, the new building on Renewal House's campus has 34 family residential program apartments - twice the previous number - as well as expanded treatment space.
