Description
The Family Collective's primary goal is to prevent and end family homelessness.
In 2014, with seed funding from the Siemer Institute, United Way of Greater Nashville launched The Family Collective-originally the Family Empowerment Program-to address homelessness, connect families to sustainable opportunities and disrupt cycles of poverty. Bethlehem Centers of Nashville is one of 25 partner organizations that serves as a Family Collective Program service location.
Families enter one of the programs within The Family Collective while experiencing a housing crisis or while receiving services at one of our hubs, community centers or schools, where they receive at least one core wrap-around service and select the service mix that best meets their needs. We seek to ensure that when a family becomes homeless, their experience is rare and brief-no longer than 30 days-and the negative effects are limited.

The program provides a nutritious meal as well as tutoring, art, athletics, camping, social skills workshops and social activities. The children receive incentive rewards for milestones and goals reached throughout the program.

BCN's Youth Programs provide youth ages nine through eighteen with academic enrichment, tutorial assistance, job readiness skills development, prevention education to combat the temptation to use alcohol, drugs and to indulge in gang warfare, violence and crime. BCN also provides alternative activities to various local and national destinations that enhance education, promote social awareness and provide opportunities of fellowship. We offer seasonal camps and year-round programs at inner-city Metro Schools connected to the Pearl-Cohn feeder system (McKissack Middle, Park Avenue Enhanced Option School). Programs: NAZA: Nashville After Zone Alliance (Northwest Zone), Say Yes To Success: Alcohol and Drug Prevention Too Smart To Start: Alcohol Prevention/Character Education Slammin' Jammin' Enrichment Camp: Academic Enrichment/Recreation Vocational Success Institute/Opportunity NOW Program: Job Readiness Training/Internship Safe and Sound Program: Fitness Program Stars of Bethlehem Club: Reading/Math Comprehension, STEM and STEAM Education.

Clients have access to the following services and activities: *Silver Sneakers Stretch and Flex *Silver Sneakers Yoga *Beginning Computers *Senior Dance *Arts and Crafts *Guest Speakers and Presenters *Health and Wellness Seminars Participation: 100% in monthly workshops and activities. The Hot Lunch program serves 216 low-income and/or disabled clients a day, five days a week, every week of the year. This adds to 4,880 nutritionally balanced lunches served monthly.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments
| BCN is 129 years old, is well-known in the community, and has produced generations of professionals, missionaries, community leaders, and family breadwinners. Among them are the former Vice-Mayor of Nashville, Howard Gentry; Arnett Bodenhamer, veteran, business owner, and former president of the local NAACP; Sister Sandra Smithson, founder of Project Reflect, and Brenda Wynn, the current Davidson County Court Clerk. BCN provides exposure to music, environmental sustainability, leadership, workforce development, and life skills. Our programs have won awards at the local, state, and national levels. Our programs and services are comprehensive and impactful, and our program directors have undergraduate and graduate degrees. We are working to align programs with Metro Schools' goals to increase test scores and develop stronger citizenship. We have increased our overall School Year success rates by seeing more than ninety percent of our children and youth advance to their next grade level. BCN operates as a community center and offers public access to many annual and seasonal programs. Entire families find themselves 'covered by the umbrella' of BCN Community Outreach through access not only to BCN programs, but also through programs offered by the partnering agencies attached to our Family Resource Center. Along with traditional programs, we also offer innovative programs to address the root causes of poverty in the North Nashville community we serve. This is an integral part of our mission to change lives and build futures. |
