Executive Director

Executive Director Ms. Rachel Hester
E-mail Rachel.Hester@RoomInTheInn.org
Term Start November 2005
Rachel's Experience: Rachel grew up in Henderson, KY before moving to Nashville to attend Trevecca Nazarene University in 1988. In 1989 she began volunteering with the Room In The Inn program as a college student and within a short time, she began working for the organization full time. Over the years, she has held several leadership positions, including program coordinator and volunteer coordinator, as well as overseeing many administrative aspects of the organization. In 1995, Room In The Inn merged with two other organizations including The Guest House and FOCUS to form Room In The Inn's Campus for Human Development, the city's only comprehensive site of services for the homeless. Rachel was an integral part of this transition, both in its planning and its implementation.

Her leadership through the years led to her being selected in 2005 to succeed Charles Strobel as the Executive Director of Room In The Inn. In her role as Executive Director, she has led the agency to even greater heights, allowing her the opportunity to use her social work and business training, as well as her interior design degree to address the needs of the homeless in new and challenging ways. In 2010, under Rachel's leadership, Room In The Inn's Campus opened its $13 million state of the art facility designed to serve the homeless. This comprehensive center includes thirteen classrooms with state of the art technology, a commercial grade kitchen that can support 600 meals daily, areas for case management and emergency services, expanded transitional housing, a recuperative care wing, and 38 units of permanent, affordable housing. Throughout her tenure, Rachel has shown an unparalleled passion and respect for the people she serves, as well as an ability to handle all aspects of the organization ranging from direct service and programming to administrative and financial. With over twenty one years of service, she is familiar with virtually all aspects of leading the organization.

Co-Executive Director

Co-Executive Director Rev. Charles Strobel
E-mail charles.strobel@roomintheinn.org
Term Start January 1986
Charles's Experience: In August 2023, Room In The Inn founding director Charlie Strobel passed away from complications of Parkinson's. Charlie never wavered in his selfless devotion to the unhoused members of the Nashville community. He believed deeply in the Beatitudes as a framework for living, specifically the words from Jesus in Luke 17 of the unworthy servants, who have done only their duty. With a smile, Charlie would often say, "Oh, wouldn't it be great to live this way and have it on your tombstone: Worthless Servant." As we continue forward, we remember his words and carry on his legacy.

"The suffering of the homeless in our city has been a burden that thousands of volunteers have carried together. . .There is joy in taking up a small part of someone else's burden, the part you can manage, the part you think you can carry. You will be strengthened by it and in turn you will know that someone else will not be crushed by what they cannot manage alone. That balance between people is the essence of love and of joy. So, I hope you will pick up the burden - the burden that you can manage. Ultimately, these are family values because we are all of us…one family."- Charles Strobel
