Mission

The mission of The Minerva Foundation of Tennessee is to provide resources for public service programs and activities that recognize, encourage and promote education, historical and cultural experiences for inter-generational members of our community.

Background

The Minerva Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) corporation, managed by a twenty-two member board of directors. The Foundation supports programs and activities designed to enhance charitable, educational, and cultural programs for youth, adults, and families in the Metropolitan Nashville community. Established in 1999, the Foundation serves as a focal point supporting public service programs. The Foundation has established a variety of programs that benefit the metropolitan Nashville community. The major areas include, but are not limited to, programs and activities that educate, enhance, and empower individuals. The Foundation has identified the following major purposes: 1. To engage in public service programs that promote and encourage high intellectual, and moral standards among residents in the metropolitan Nashville community, 2. To establish, foster, and organize educational, historical, and cultural programs that will provide meaningful inter-generational activities in the metro Nashville community and improve the quality of life for future generations; 3. Administer services for the homeless, senior citizens and youth; and (4) provide scholarship awards (traditional and non-traditional), cultural programs, historical events, and other service-oriented activities.

Impact

Provide scholarships to deserving graduating seniors, provide financial support to organizations serving the inner city. Support research for women impacted by HIV/AIDS, provide supplies to the Eighteenth Avenue Enrichment Center, contributions to the American Cancer Society, Partners in the Struggle, and The Magdalene House. The Foundation also provided scholarships to non-traditional students. The Foundation received a $10,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Health to encourage African American women to increase their physical activity and positively impact their overall health. The Foundation's major goal is to expand the capacity of our Community Cultural Center to house the many programs designed for youths and adults in the Nashville Metropolitan area. Second, to expand our educational programs for junior and high school girls and boys. The organization's third goal is to increase the participation of members of the community who can benefit from our programs.

Needs

The five most pressing needs are: 1. Raise $1.7 million dollars to expand the capacity of our Community Cultural Center to house community events programs. 2. To identify funds to support our capital campaign. 3. To increase the awareness of the Foundation's many programs and activities. 4. To increase collaborative efforts with organizations with a mission and purpose that is in keeping with the Foundation's mission.

Board Chair Statement

The Minerva Foundation of Tennessee, Inc. provides many unique and needed services to the Nashville community. As an ordained minister who is involved in a number of community organizations, I have great appreciation for the Foundation's focus on youth and our support of youth interested in higher education. Our annual prom boutique, Minerva's Closet, provides area high school junior and senior girls with prom dresses and accessories at no cost. This event has grown in popularity each year as well help parents and students alike to participate in this significant rite of passage. Our non-traditional scholarship affirms and supports those who have not given up on their dream of higher education or vocational training. Additionally, our programs for senior adults helps to keep them active and engaged in their later years. Our challenge is to expand the knowledge of our organization and to increase our footprint in the Nashville community. We are meeting this challenge through building partnerships and coalitions with other community groups serving the those identified in our mission statement.
