Mission

The mission of the John Overton HS Alumni Association, Inc. To support the activities of the school in delivering a quality education To foster a supportive relationship with school administrators, students, teachers, and the community To foster ongoing relationships with Alumni Preserve the history of the school and graduates.

Background

Founded by a group of alumni who came together during the 2017 renovation of John Overton High School, our original focus was to preserve the memorabilia and history of the school, but we soon saw a much larger need to build a community of support around the school, its current students, and staff. Since our creation, we have grown to over 2,000 members.

Impact

The Alumni Association's purpose is to create community awareness and pride in John Overton High School. Events, academic programs, and concerns will not belong only to the current students and faculty, but to the Crieve Hall, Tusculum, Granberry, and Oak Hill neighborhoods and feeder schools of John Overton High School as well. We hope to keep as many graduates as possible connected to the school, its history, and traditions so that we can all contribute to the educational development of our young people and give them a sense of belonging and support. In our first year, we have increased our membership from five to 2,054, established a board, named committees, and formed our organization of Charter Members. We also have a presence on Facebook with the purpose being to communicate the activities of the Alumni Group, and we have established a website. We have set up a strategic plan for addressing needed improvements to the girl's athletic facilities and additional field needs of band, football, soccer, and softball. Throughout the summer, the Alumni Association has purchased and installed new catch nets, provided seating, and established and seeded the soccer field. We have held two fundraisers and established a scholarship fund. We also have maintained a presence at the school when any event is held. Our future goals are to develop a plan for an Alumni Building on the Overton campus, create a plan and timing for building a softball field, rework the tennis courts, help establish and support a golf team, and increase our scholarship funding. So far in 2018, the Alumni Association has purchased jerseys for the girls' soccer team, lined the girls' softball field, and grassed and seeded the girls' and boys' soccer fields..
