Mission

The YMCA of Middle Tennessee was founded in 1875 to be a worldwide charitable fellowship united by a common loyalty to Jesus Christ for the purpose of helping persons grow in spirit, mind and body.

Background

The YMCA of Middle Tennessee has served the communities of Middle Tennessee for more than 140 years. The Y that took root in Nashville in 1875 to nurture strong Christian characters in the hearts of young men is today the region's largest nonprofit dedicated to strengthening community. Although our community and its needs have changed in the years since our founding, our commitment to meeting those needs remains the same. Today the Y serves more than 250,000 members across six counties.

Impact

The nation's third-largest YMCA Association by membership, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee works with neighbors in six counties at 13 family wellness centers, the Joe C. Davis Outdoor Center and over 100 program locations. The YMCA strengthens communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Needs

As a primary expression of its mission, the YMCA believes in strengthening community, and believes that every community has value. It expresses this belief by ensuring equity and voice to members of the communities it serves, and by providing its resources and opportunities to everyone, regardless of background or socioeconomic status. The YMCA provides a range of outreach programs for constituencies ranging from survivors of breast cancer (After Breast Cancer), people suffering from addictions or other life challenges (Spirit-Mind Small Groups), children reading below grade level (Y-Literacy), children experiencing food insecurity (Anti-Hunger Initiatives), youth of color preparing for college or career entry (Achievers programs), and more at no cost to participants.

CEO Statement

For more than 30 years, it's been my privilege to be part of the Y, a nonprofit with an incredible legacy of service. Since its founding in London in 1844, the Y has been a force for good in communities across the globe in times of both crisis and triumph. At every turn, it stood ready to serve, meeting critical social needs through the Industrial Revolution, every U.S. military conflict since the Civil War, the immigration wave of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Civil Rights movement and more. And along the way, it still made time for fun by inventing basketball, volleyball and racquetball.

While you may know the Y for much of what you see, our sports and aquatics programs and commitment to physical fitness, you should also know that it's the "why" behind the Y that drives us to continue investing in our kids, our health and our neighbors. Inspired by our Christian mission, we believe the work we do every day is about more than a soccer field or treadmill. Everything we do, every service we provide, seeks to make our community a better place to live, work and raise a family. And we believe good health is about more than the body: that's why our mission commits us to helping the whole person, spirit, mind and body.

So from the child who needs a safe place to go after school, to the mom who desperately needs an hour to work out while her child is in good hands, to the lonely senior whose only social connections are at their local Y, we're building a stronger community, one person at a time. I love that at the Y, we know the small but meaningful things we do today add up to bigger things tomorrow. That's why I'm still here. Because we believe in the potential our future holds, and we believe amazing things can happen when we work together for the common good.
