Mission

To provide free lodging in a 'home away from home' for families of patients receiving medical care at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center and the Nashville VA Medical Center, as well as to support the programs of the Fisher House Foundation, Inc.

Background

The Fisher House Foundation was begun in 1990 by Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher as a way to support the families of service members with free lodging at medical centers. The first two houses opened in 1991 at Bethesda Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Since that time a total of 86 houses have been constructed serving nearly 368,000 families saving them approximately $450 Million in lodging and transportation costs. Other programs have been added including Hotels for Heroes and Hero Miles, which help families to visit injured military service personnel in places where there are no Fisher Houses. In addition, a grant program in partnership with Newmans Own helps provide funds to other military support groups and scholarships to children of military personnel.

Impact

On September 15, 2012, the official ground breaking ceremony for the Tennessee Fisher House was held. On November 7, 2013, the Dedication Ceremony of the completed house was dedicated. We have welcomed over 372 families annually. Stays have been for a few days to over 12 months.

Needs

The most pressing need at this time is for additional donations for continuing assistance to our guests now that the house is open. These funds are used for basic needs of the individual guests and include food, personal needs, House supplies, and guests transportation. As the House gets older more things will need repair/replacement. Our commitment is to the Veteran/Veteran family members, and to ensuring that our House remains a special 'Home Away From Home'. By doing it this way the Veteran and his/her family can concentrate entirely on the well being and support of the patient and not worry about food or lodging.

CEO Statement

The Tennessee Fisher House is an amazing home for Veterans and/or their Family Members to stay while receiving care at either the Nashville or Murfreesboro VAMC locations. We meet a critical need for our families. We eliminate the concerns and costs associated with a lengthy stay away from home and allow the focus to be entirely on the patient. We offer a home like atmosphere that provides a place to relax after a long day at the hospital, a place to interact with others in similar situations, and a place to decompress and think out what may be next. We have served over 300 families annually with nothing but praise and thank you from our guests. Any and all donations to our foundatoin will directly benefit veterans and military families.

Board Chair Statement

Today at the Nashville VA Medical Center and the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro we have a 'Home Away From Home' to assist Veterans and Family members needing our help. They are provided, free of charge, comfortable lodging so that they can be there for the duration of their loved one's illness in the hospital. As Mr. Zachary Fisher so adequately put it, 'a family's love is the best medicine'. Being in the hospital is a lonely, insecure feeling which we should not expect our heroes to endure without their loved ones along side them. Please help us with the costs involved with assisting the families who are our guests at TN Fisher House by donating whatever you can afford to the
