Mission

RePublic Schools is a free, open-enrollment network of public charter schools serving approximately 3,000 scholars the majority of whom come from historically underserved communities, across six schools in two cities: Jackson, Mississippi and Nashville, Tennessee. Our network is dedicated to reimagining public education in the South by preparing scholars for college and teaching computer science.

We believe that computer science is an incredible pathway for our scholars. By learning front-end web development, robotics, app development, and other computer science disciplines, our scholars are building a unique skillset. By participating in The Big Payback, you're giving our scholars the opportunity to continue their learning through being able to participate in internal and external summer programs and pursuing a post-secondary computer science education.

Background

RePublic Schools began in 2011 when two schools, Liberty Collegiate Academy and Nashville Prep, opened their doors to their founding classes of fifth graders in Nashville. In 2014, after several years of independently leading excellent schools to full growth, the leaders of Nashville Prep and Liberty Collegiate joined forces to found RePublic Schools to extend their impact beyond the walls of the existing schools, using a shared educational model as the foundation. This led to the creation of an additional middle school and high school in Nashville, and two middle schools, one of which was the first charter school in the state of Mississippi, and an elementary school in Jackson.

Impact

Since it's founding, RePublic Schools offers families a free high quality education option for their child. We promise our families that we will get 100 percent of their scholars to and through college and we work daily to honor that promise. This commitment to academics has led our scholars to achieve incredible things. For example, our school Reimagine Prep had highest accountability score of any open enrollment middle school in Jackson. Of our seventh grade Reimagine scholars, more than half scored proficient or advanced on the Mississippi state math exam, surpassing the state average. In Nashville, Liberty Collegiate Academy was named a Reward School by the state of Tennessee for being among the top schools in the state.

In addition to traditional academic success, RePublic Schools was a trailblazer in computer science education for all scholars. We believe that by teaching our scholars computer science, we are teaching them the skills of tomorrow that will give them a competitive edge in the future job market. Additionally, we believe computer literacy is an essential part of a strong college prep program. We developed our own high quality curriculum that we share freely with other schools and networks, leading to more than 10,000 students across the country having access to computer science.

Needs

RePublic's schools operate almost exclusively on the per-pupil funds that all public schools receive. However, each new RePublic school requires early philanthropy to support start-up costs such as a facility, student transportation, and a founding leadership staff. In addition, RePublic funds extracurricular and enrichment programming through philanthropy. At full growth, each of RePublic's middle schools will become sustainable on public dollars alone after early philanthropic support.
