Mission

TuneTown Show Chorus embodies and promotes the American art form of barbershop-style, a cappella, four-part harmony singing. Our intention is to be a musical asset to our community and to strive for excellence through entertainment, community service and education. This includes providing a teaching vehicle for young women interested in singing. We offer a creative, friendly and fun musical arena for women of any age or race.

Background

Our chorus formed in 1998, under a non-profit umbrella organization called Sweet Adelines International. SAI maintains a platform for a worldwide network of female barbershop harmony singers to bond, grow and create. With its help, our chorus provides professional level, family-oriented performances that combine vibrant vocal harmonies and choreography. Ranging in age from 18 to 80, TuneTown's 60 plus members are from all areas of Middle Tennessee, including Nashville, Franklin, Murfreesboro and Mt. Juliet. A few members drive weekly from their homes in Alabama to rehearse. We are bound together by our love of song and community.

Impact

Our 2021 activities were limited as a result of the pandemic, but we enjoyed a successful 2019, with a range of performances as well as 'giving back.' We continued to partner with Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) and have volunteers in the Nashville public school system working with teachers to improve and expand opportunities for students to learn. We held continuing, in-house, clothing and school material drives, bringing in essential items for public school children living in need. Students at Charlotte Park Elementary Public School benefitted from a volunteer member teaching musical skills. Our members helped at another high-level poverty public elementary school, Cockrill, pitching in to assist students with reading. Also, gifts were donated so children could give presents to family members and assistance was given with the 'holiday store' where children got the presents. Other community activities included helping Second Harvest Food Bank with food drives and contributing goods for homeless and battered women. We volunteer over 17,000 hours in a normal year. TuneTown continued to expand its music education work with young people along with increasing its outreach in the community. One of our most fun and exciting activities was a fundraising Breakfast with Santa in 2019, which we were trying for the first time. Many families came to eat pancakes, meet Santa and listen to roaming quartets and ensembles sing. Earlier in the year, we had performed in New Orleans at the Sweet Adelines International conference and competition, as well as in Kentucky in a regional Sweet Adelines International event, which drew fellow singers from around the region, to work on skills and perform. We look forward to finding a safe way to return to similar but new activities in 2021.

Needs

We are largely self-funded and can use donations to support our activities, including for coaching, rent and offering scholarships for musical development and education for young people. We would appreciate contributions of any amount to put into musical programs in our local schools and youth groups for the purpose of introducing and developing four-part harmony techniques, building healthy friendships and instilling confidence through song.

Board Chair Statement

Singing is more than a hobby for many of our members. It is an opportunity to teach and share an art form that we love. Through our community and our music we nurture the confidence and leadership skills that will serve women in all aspects of their lives. We have several mother-daughter pairs in our midst, too, so we are family in many ways.
