Mission

We leverage volunteer resources, time and private donations to create a public-private partnership with Metro Parks and Recreation in order to improve Woodmont Park, one of the few public spaces in Green Hills.

Background

Friends of Woodmont Park started in 2009 as a committee project of the Woodlawn Area Neighborhood Association. In 2012, Friends of Woodmont Park became a separate not-for-profit corporation in the State of Tennessee, and in late 2012 applied and received our 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization status. In early May 2013, we were recognized by the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation as the official Friends Group for Woodmont Park. Through volunteer efforts, individual donations and grants, we have brought numerous improvements to the park including planting of over 75 trees, installation of the big kids playground, fencing around the perimeter, installation of play boulders, construction of new shade pavilion, and many more. We have witnessed vastly increased usage at the park, and a solidifying of neighborhood relations in Green Hills and surrounding areas.

Impact

We had a large volunteer service day this year with Montgomery Bell Academy students to maintain trees, mulch, fertilize, paint and stain. The four person Board members have been very active to ensure the long-term viability of the organization and to generate new ideas. We continued to plant trees where needed or memorial trees when donated, and began to enjoy the shade from our original batch of new trees, some of which are now approaching 20-25' tall. In 2020 we plan on doing a neighborhood outreach to increase our visibility with new residents. We have planned and gotten Metro Parks approval to build a new basketball court on the over level that will solve various problems with the existing court: ADA access; lower baskets for younger children; lengthening the court and smoothing and leveling the court with new asphalt. We will continue to maintain and monitor the tree canopy in the park and work with volunteer groups to maintain the park.

Needs

We would love a volunteer to coordinate and plan more social events. We would love a volunteer who could create and maintain a social media presence beyond our existing platforms.

Board Chair Statement

Woodmont Park is a gathering place for young and old, not only in the neighborhood, but for people from neighborhoods all around Nashville. Our plan for a new basketball court with lower goals for young children will continue to expand the attraction of more children and families. The old play structure is 18 years old and on the Parks list for replacement as funds become available. We will work with Parks to ensure that the new structure is designed for 2 - 5 year olds (unlike the current one which is 5 - 12) and involve the community in the planning process.
