Mission

To create a future for children and families filled with promise and prosperity.

Background

In 1991 what had been Parents Anonymous became Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee (PCAT) and a new state chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America. In 2010, PCAT committed to providing only evidence based/informed and primary prevention programs in our efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect. We subsequently became one of the first agencies in the state to be awarded competitive grant funding for evidence based home visiting as a nationally proven means to prevent child abuse and neglect. In addition to our primary location in Davidson County we have regional offices in Murfreesboro, Lebanon, Oak Ridge and Chattanooga and have been providing evidence based home visiting to 20 distressed and at risk surrounding counties since 2013.

In July 2020, PCAT launched a new brand and messaging campaign. We are now Nurture the Next, a name and brand that fully captures what we do rather than what we prevent. Along with providing hands-on help and crisis intervention with vulnerable families, Nurture the Next is creating lasting impact in communities with a two-generation approach, using primary prevention education and advocacy to share ways that everyone in any community can support strong families and keep children safe.

Impact

Parenting matters at Nurture the Next because we know that nurtured children grow into resilient, capable adults, and nurturing homes are built by parents who have the knowledge and a positive support system to help. Because parenting is a skill passed down from one generation to the next we help vulnerable Tennessee families build the skills and confidence needed to create a caring home that ensures the healthy development and future prosperity of their children. We are also changing the landscape for families in communities statewide through advocacy, prevention education, and leadership training for parents to ensure that their voices infuse local policy and programs. Our programs, services, and initiatives leverage the power of adults to keep kids safe, valued and thriving, and work 'upstream' to prevent and mediate complex problems like child abuse, poor health, school failure, and generational poverty. Crucial to achieving our goals and objectives is the work of our most important collaborators--the parents, caregivers, and communities across the state preventing child abuse and neglect by ensuring that children and youth are growing up in safe, stable and nurturing environments.

Needs

Nurture the Next welcomes volunteers with interest or expertise in the areas of prevention, wellness and resiliency, public relations, media communications, fund development, human resources and technology. With headquarters in Nashville, regional offices in Murfreesboro, Lebanon, Oak Ridge and Chattanooga, as many as five programs being delivered out of each office, and our new re-branding campaign, our communications committee is actively seeking volunteers.

Volunteers also help Nurture the Next organize community outreach and fundraising events, family connection events to celebrate and connect those participating in our voluntary home visiting programs, and holiday gift drives and parties for families. In order to keep the children in of the families, we serve safe, we are always collecting new cribs and car seats for families that can't afford them. Volunteers and companies help by hosting donation drives for new breast pumps, diapers, wipes, diaper bags, car seats, baby gates, and pack-n-plays.

CEO Statement

In my 20+ years of service to Nurture the Next, it has been a joy to watch parents discover new ways of building safe, loving homes with their children. It's thrilling to see communities across Tennessee come together around primary prevention of child abuse and neglect by building strong, supportive networks for children and families. It's been exciting working with our new brand and messaging. It's allowed us to serve more families and strengthen awareness of our organization because we can talk about what programs and services we provide rather than what we prevent. Along with engaging more vulnerable families in our programs, we anticipate that the new brand will increase private and public support for operations with its two-generation messaging about the power of parents and communities to impact the health and prosperity of younger generations.

Board Chair Statement

Nurture the Next's mission aligns perfectly with my personal and professional commitment to creating a better future for children and families. Parenting matters and it doesn't come with a rule book. Nurture the Next's evidence-based approach to supporting families continues to break generational cycles of abuse and neglect through effective and innovative programming, advocacy, and education. I am proud to lead the board of an organization working tirelessly to create safe, stable, and nurturing families and communities. My service provides an outlet for my passion for building a healthier society. Please consider supporting the work of Nurture the Next to serve more families and prevent adverse childhood experiences for generations.
