Background
Nashville Coaching Coalition was founded in 2015 on the belief that interscholastic athletics is the most strategic framework for improving the social and emotional health of our young people. The impact athletics has on our young people is so profound, yet our rec leagues and educational communities have no effective framework that prepares adults to use this influential platform to the benefit of each individual child - a shortcoming that results in missed opportunities and deeply negative experiences. We believe there is simply too much at stake to leave a young person's athletic experience to chance. If we want sport to be an agent of restoration for our children, coaches must be prepared to effectively mentor and lead and connected to a support community.
Impact
Accomplishments:
Over 500 attendees at The Coach Forum, a one-day professional development opportunity for athletic coaches.
Launched The Coaches' Leadership Academy, a five-week program focused weeks of interpersonal and leadership development that will drastically influence the way each of them views their coaching, increase their capacity to lead with care and empathy, and connect them to a network of like-minded coaches from whom they can draw encouragement and support. Each coach impacts approximately 75 students each year.
Athletic department workshops at multiple schools impacted over 800 coaches and approximately 15,000 students in the last year.
Launched Metro Coaches' Leadership Series to train all coaches in MNPS.
Goals:
Expand The Coaches' Leadership Academy and Metro Coaches' Leadership Series.
Over 500 coaches and athletic directors at The Coach Forum; expand to add more breakout sessions and workshops.
Gain more funding from new donors and foundational grants.
Nashville becomes the premier city in the country for developing emotionally healthy coaches and athletes.
Needs
Donations so that coaches and schools who cannot pay or cannot pay the full cost to attend The Coaches' Leadership Academy or The Coach Forum still have the opportunity to attend.
Regular funding for our programs and operations.
CEO Statement
Sports do not build character, coaches do. But do coaches really know how to use sports to build character? Interscholastic athletics profoundly impacts the youth in our communities. However, the impact of the prevailing "win-at-all-costs" sports landscape often harms parents, administrators, officials, coaches, and particularly our young athletes.Being a coach today is hard work, but being a transformational coach is even harder. Coaches cannot do it on their own. The Nashville Coaching Coalition is a team of your neighbors who are no longer willing to leave a young person's athletic experience to chance. We believe there is simply too much at stake.
Board Chair Statement
Instead of accepting the status quo, we are committed to leveraging the undeniable power of sport for the good of all, empowering the ballfields and gymnasiums in Middle Tennessee to support the growth of a new generation of happier and healthier parents, spouses, business executives, and community leaders. We believe that the first step in this process is to provide Middle Tennessee with meaningful professional development opportunities for coaches - opportunities that enable coaches to gain the perspective, the skills, and the networks they need (and desire) to be great leaders of the young lives they influence. Every coach knows where to grow their knowledge of the X's and 0's; we are creating experiences for them to improve their ability to work with people. These growth opportunities come in several formats ranging from one-day conferences to year-long workshops for athletic departments. These programs are open to male and female coaches of all sports. We believe that the GOAL of every interscholastic sports organization is to win, but that the PURPOSE must be to develop healthy, thriving young people!
