Mission

Nashville in Harmony's mission is to use music to build community and create social change; bringing people together within the LGBTQIA+ community and the community at large.

Background

Nashville in Harmony (NiH) was founded in 2004 under the sponsorship of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashville ('FUUCN'.) The chorus performed for the first time during the Christmas holiday season with 19 members. The Chorus was financially supported by the FUUCN during the first year, but during the second year, Nashville in Harmony obtained a Tennessee Charter to become a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and held its own fund-raising dinner and auction. Also, during the second year, the chorus hired a permanent director, Don Schlosser. The Chorus rehearses under a two-season year, performs at various outreach events, and concludes each season with a final concert. The Chorus is now singing with more than 100 members and has performed at multiple venues, which include The Factory, MTSU, The Frist Center for the Arts, Cheekwood, Schermerhorn Symphony Center, War Memorial Auditorium, Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts at Blair School of Music, The Renaissance Center, many area churches, and the renowned Ryman Auditorium. In 2017, Nashville in Harmony realized a dream by introducing their youth choir. The Major Minors (the Nashville in Harmony youth chorus) is a group for young people, ages 12-18, to be themselves without apology. The chorus is a safe, welcoming, and accessible place for all youth that celebrates the joy, diversity, strength, and pride of today's young people. Members of the Major Minors find their own voice and unique identity within a welcoming community.
