Mission

Rise Against Hunger is driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Our mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world's most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.

Background

In 1998, envisioning a world without hunger, Ray Buchanan ? a United Methodist minister ? founded Stop Hunger Now. In 2017, Stop Hunger Now rebranded to become Rise Against Hunger. After enlisting as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War, Ray Buchanan quickly recognized that accomplishing a mission required "commitment to something larger than yourself." Driving Rise Against Hunger's work is the recognition that ending hunger is more than just feeding people, which led Rise Against Hunger to focus its feeding programs in areas where we can have a real impact and expand its hunger-fighting programs beyond meal packaging and distribution. Rise Against Hunger - Nashville brings the same mission and since March 5, 2016 we've packaged over 1 million meals as an office.

Impact

Rise Against Hunger is driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Our mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world's most vulnerable and by creating a global commitment to mobilize critical resources. We are committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #2 of ending hunger by 2030. Rise Against Hunger has four pathways to end hunger: Emergency Relief, Nourishing Lives, Empowering Communities, and Grow The Movement.

Needs

Rise Against Hunger top three priority funding needs, in addition to volunteer meal packaging contributions, include: 1) Creating self-sufficient communities through education, agriculture, microfinance and other sustainable development projects; 2) Growing the volunteer movement to end hunger through program and affiliate expansions; 3) Preparing for crisis and disaster relief.

CEO Statement

Dear Friends, In 2017, the United Nations Food & Agricultural Organization (FAO) reported that the number of hungry people increased to 815 million worldwide ? 38 million more than the previous year. However, despite this setback, we are on a trajectory to end hunger. Over the last two decades, the number of people experiencing hunger and malnutrition decreased from 24 percent to 11 percent of the world's population. Based on this progress, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goal #2: Zero Hunger by 2030. Rise Against Hunger is aligned with global initiatives to end hunger and recognizes that we must step up our efforts in order to reach this ambitious goal. Following the adoption of Sustainable Development Goal #2, we sought to broaden our impact and created our Pathways to End Hunger: Nourishing Lives, Growing the Movement, Empowering Communities and Responding to Emergencies. Since then, we've made significant progress, especially in our Empowering Communities and Responding to Emergencies programs. The year was marked by a historic hurricane season, and we were able to provide emergency assistance to nearly 114,500 people in the coastal U.S. and Caribbean nations reeling from back-to-back hurricanes: Harvey, Irma and Maria. We achieved some major milestones in 2018, and it proved to be our biggest year yet! We provided more than 76.9 million meals, served beneficiaries in 31 countries and ultimately impacted over 794,700 million lives. We engaged a record number of nearly 430,000 volunteers across the world and expanded our reach in the U.S., opening a dedicated location in the Chicago area. Looking forward, we are committed to showing the world that it IS possible to end hunger in our lifetime. 2019 marks our 21th year as an organization, and we see a bright path to 2030 ahead. Our big plans include: * Promoting our Public Policy Agenda by engaging volunteers in advocacy. * Releasing our first-ever awareness campaign, This is possible., which aims to educate and call the world to support and act on Sustainable Development Goal #2. * Engaging volunteers in eight new communities in Florida and California by implementing a new supply chain model of meal distribution. We know that ending hunger by 2030 IS possible, but we cannot achieve it alone. The strides we have made in the past 19 years have been made possible by you, our dedicated volunteers, advocates, partners and supporters. Rise Against Hunger is in the fight against hunger for the long haul ? all the way to 2030 and beyond! Sincerely, Rod Brooks President & CEO
