CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Nashville is growing at an unprecedented rate, both in terms of population and built infrastructure. To compensate for this built density, more land must be set aside for parks, greenways, and open space. Greenways are critical to Nashville's environmental vitality and quality of life. The greenways are more important now than any other time in our history as a city. A growing body of evidence suggests an association between access to urban green space, mental health, and well being. Greenways improve quality of life in these important ways: Promote Conservation - We need to preserve green corridors in Nashville that contain natural resources such as wetlands, trees and native plants, and wildlife habitat. Once gone, it is very difficult to get back. Provide Connectivity and Off-street Transportation - A great network of greenway trails links our neighborhoods, schools, parks and commercial areas and provides a safe corridor away from traffic for pedestrians and cyclists. Promote Recreation, Health and Well Being - We, as humans, need to move more. It does not take much, but more is better. We are healthier when we can be around nature and we all deserve this amenity close to home for our collective well-being. Tennessee is near the bottom of the health rankings of our country. With greenways we have an opportunity to enable a healthier population in Nashville and Davidson County. The more active people are the better the likelihood to improve population health. The more people we have walking, running, and cycling, the better the opportunity to improve well-being.
