Periscope: Artist Entrepreneur Training is a year-long business development that empowers pre-professional and professional artists to see their creative practice through an entrepreneurial lens. Through an intensive business development curriculum, small group work with peers, and one-on-one mentoring with a business expert, participants prepare to take their careers to the next level. At the culminating event, Periscope Pitch, participants have the opportunity to present their business plans to the public and to win funding for their project.
In fiscal year 2023, we hosted our largest audience ever for the 10th Anniversary Periscope Pitch + Artist Entrepreneur Showcase. Among two Periscope cohorts- one serving Greater Nashville artists and one serving rural Tennessee artists- 37% lived in rural Tennessee counties, 27% of artists served identified as people of color, and 17% were 65 years of age or older.

Arts Board Matching aims to foster dynamic leadership in the arts by providing business professionals with the necessary skills to become engaged and efficient board members. This initiative also matches business professionals seeking board membership with arts organizations in need of capable board members. Participants in this program benefit from extensive and diverse exposure to the arts industry, networking opportunities with arts organizations and professionals from various industries, and the chance to work alongside other community leaders. Starting in 2024, this initiative is revamping our impact by increasing racial diversity within arts nonprofit boards across Nashville by recruiting at least 40% professionals of color for each class. By our most recent fiscal year, the Arts & Business Council will have placed over 160 trained board members on the boards of 40+ nonprofit arts organizations in Greater Nashville.

Fiscal Sponsorship is an incubator for the creative community that provides structure to qualified art projects & organizations, independent films, and documentary media projects that are not interested or not yet ready to become tax-exempt nonprofit organizations. Through the Arts & Business Council, Tennessee-based arts groups can receive tax-deductible grants and donations and also benefit from additional management, administrative, and marketing support as their projects evolve. Thanks to fiscal sponsorship, over twenty-eight projects have received more than $822,000 in charitable funding since its inception, which would have otherwise been inaccessible. This initiative has been instrumental in launching several fascinating Nashville-based projects, including Creatives' Day, Locate Arts/Tri-Star Arts, Nashville Design Week, Off The Wall (murals on Charlotte Avenue), and many more.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Over the past three years, the Arts & Business Council has increased our focus on programs with strong tangible results on the overall success and sustainability of Nashville's creative community. This can be seen with the expansion of our Education program to include additional levels of training opportunities for artists and administrators at all stages in their careers, a second annual cohort of Arts Board Matching, and the introduction of the Fiscal Sponsorship program. With the success of these programs, and the current landscape of opportunity in Nashville, going forward, the Arts & Business Council is exploring ways to better serve and engage artists throughout their career lifecycles.
