Description
Each summer, Purpose Prep will host its first annual summer reading drive for its families. This summer reading drive is in support of our summer reading program. Purpose Prep requires every scholar to read during the summer. It is our hope that our scholars will not only take the time to read, but during this time they will also gain measurable improvements in their reading abilities. Building a strong reading foundation before starting kindergarten will help ensure our scholars future academic success. In an effort to support our summer reading program the summer reading drive will provide free books for our scholars to choose from. The event will begin by educating families on the importance of our scholars having a strong literary foundation. We want to make sure that every scholar and their family truly understands the importance of our summer reading program. Throughout the event we will have small reading groups set up for scholars to join. This provides scholars with an opportunity to hear some of the books they will be able to choose from. These small reading groups will be led by Purpose Prep teachers and volunteers. Our volunteers include local business owners, college students, and church organizations. After scholars and families have had the chance to hear about the importance of literacy and listen to the books that are available we will allow every scholar to choose at least two books. Every book available to scholars will provide support in the basic fundamental skills necessary when entering kindergarten.

At Purpose Prep, we know that in order for our scholars to be successful, they must be able to read, comprehend, write, and analyze literature at the highest levels. Our school day incorporates over 225 minutes of rigorous, literacy instruction daily, and we have multiple opportunities in the day for scholars to read books at their instructional and independent level. Additional funding for $18,000 will ensure that our school has a more robust library for multiple grade levels than our current resources provide. We would be able to purchase additional nonfiction and fiction texts through vendors such as Scholastic and Rigby. These texts would support with high levels of differentiation for our scholars and enable teachers to have a wider variety of texts to align with the grade level objectives that need to be mastered at each grade level.

The Metropolitan Nashville Public School District does not financially support transportation needs for students within charter schools. With a broad base of support from families, we have received hundreds of applications. Families are making a statement about the need for high quality elementary schools for their children by endorsing the work of Purpose Prep. However, the economically depressed area of North Nashville spans widely. Purpose Prep has budgeted for two school busses to provide free and public transportation for our scholars to and from the school. However, given the widespread area of where our enrolled families live and our adherence to the time limits that elementary students can be on a bus, we would need three busses to provide families throughout the North Nashville community access to our school. Having an additional bus will also ensure time-efficient bus routes for our scholars. Additional funding for $50,000 would provide an additional bus, enabling access for more families to our school.

Quality professional development is essential to developing and maintaining a high caliber team of administrators, teachers, and staff. In May, hired staff will visit high performing elementary schools, specifically North Star Academy in Newark, NJ, for a minimum of two days. The opportunity to visit high performing schools assist staff with internalizing the vision for Purpose Prep, and exposes them to several practices in action at these high performing schools, specifically behavioral expectations, effective implementation of curricula, school and classroom procedures and systems. In July, teachers will engage in over three weeks of summer professional development days focused on the academic program and curriculum, school culture, and data and assessments. This training enables teachers to deliver high quality instruction, a core component of our mission, and will prepare them to execute at a high level starting on day one.Further, Julie Jackson, Managing Director of Uncommon Schools, and Juliana Worrell, Principal of North Star Academy Fairmount Elementary, both successful school leaders of color, are scheduled to lead sessions focused on school culture, school systems and procedures, and curriculum implementation with staff of Purpose Prep during summer orientation. These leaders bring experience in supporting teachers in high-performing environments, and having their support during staff orientation and training is invaluable. With funding, Purpose Prep could budget $15,000 towards these critical professional development opportunities prior to the start of the school year. These professional development opportunities ensure staff members are fully prepared to execute their roles at a high level.
