Description
The participants in the Junior Dolphin program are children and adults with special needs who require refinement of technique and stamina. We are preparing these participants for the Dolphin Swim Team. These classes focus on teaching all four strokes, building endurance, and teaching swimmers how to follow a coaches instructions. Volunteers and instructors work with the same swimmers each week. We have a skill check list and each time a swimmers masters a new skill, it is recorded. We see improvements every week.

Description
The Future Dolphins is a learn to swim program for children and adults with special needs. The participants in this program have little to no independent swimming experience. Swimmers work one-on-one with two to three trained volunteers on basic swim skills and water safety. Each class is made up of 8-15 swimmers (depending on pool space), each working on individualized skills. During each 30 minute class, there are four to five experienced lead instructors in the pool assisting/training the volunteers as needed. We offer lessons in the fall, spring and summer at three different locations in Nashville. 120 participants are currently in this program. Private swim lessons, similar to the ones we are providing, can cost up to $60 per lesson. We provide lessons at absolutely no cost to all participants, regardless of their economic background.

Description
Participants on our swim team are adults and children with special needs who can swim 25 yards independently. This the most advanced, skilled practice group of our programs. We presently have 90 members on our team. We offer four practices a week, year-round, to train and improve our participants swimming skills and endurance. Our swimmers compete in Special Olympics locally, regionally and nationally. In addition to practices and meets, we organize social events to enhance the lives of our participants. There is no cost to any participant to join our team. We cover all expenses for our swimmers including travel to out of town meets from our fundraising efforts. We do not have an age out policy so our swim team members will receive consistent, aerobic exercise for the rest of their lives. Our team is made up of athletes ranging from 8-50 years of age.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Each of the three categories of our program provides life-long opportunities to the participants and families specific to swimming. From the learn to swim to the competitive pool, participants enjoy the healthy benefits provided by time in the water. Pool space is our biggest challenge. Indoor pool space is difficult to find, especially during the after school hours and weekends. We have a long-term goal of building our own facility. Until then we will continue to build strong relationships with the pools that are currently available to us.
