Description
On average each month, the Nashville Community Bail Fund is able to provide financial support to approximately 20 low-income individuals who cannot afford to post bail. With the NCBF's help, citizens who are presumed innocent but cannot afford their freedom from jail can continue their lives pending trial. The Nashville Bail Fund works with these individuals to ensure that they show up for their court dates. Once a person's case closes, their bail is released and returned to the Nashville Community Bail Fund for use to help free the next person. Working together, the NCBF and those we free create a self-sustaining tool that makes the court system more fair for everyone.

Long-term Success
The overall goal of the Nashville Community Bail Fund is to eliminate wealth based detention - this bail system that cages people who cannot pay to wait for their trial date at home with families and within their community. At this time, we are bailing people out who are in this situation. More than 53% of the people who are arrested and bailed out by us are found innocent and their charges are dropped. If we didn't bail them out, they would have served jail time unnecessarily awaiting their court date. While in jail, people--presumed innocent--can lose their jobs, fall behind in their education, and/or become disconnected with their families and support networks. It's a quick spiral downhill from arrest to depression and other detrimental impacts when someone is forced to sit in a cage because they couldn't afford to pay for bail.
Short-term Success
Nashville Community Bail Fund is moving people out of the jail system and connecting them to supportive resources. We fund bail and work with each individual saved to stay on track and show up for court on time to address their issues that put them in conflict with the justice system. Along the way, should a person need additional supports, we will help make these connections to housing, counseling, substance abuse programs, or other as needed. We want to allow every individual who is confronted by our justice system through arrest and bail options to have the opportunity to await their trial date outside of our punitive jails. To date, we have bailed out 1,000 individuals from jail who were only going to stay in these cages until their court date because they couldn't afford whatever fee they were facing ($500, $750, $1000, $2,000).
