June 2022 HSE Graduate's Transformation!

Hannah did not waste a moment of her 2nd chance to complete her education. She enrolled Fall of 2021 determined to overcome the obstacles of her past which included cycles of abuse, traumatic experiences, and incarceration. In spite of her past, or maybe because of it - Hannah came to class each night with a positive mindset. She encouraged and helped classmates who seemed to struggle with what came easy for her. She once commented how much she loved coming to Begin Anew because we cheered her on and gave her the encouragement she needed to believe in herself.

Since obtaining her diploma, she has been promoted to lead trainer at the YMCA and is now enrolled online at National University to pursue a degree in Business. We are proud to share the transformation that continues to take place in Hannah's life!

Long-term Success
Adult literacy affects every aspect of society, including welfare systems, employment rates, healthcare costs, and crime rates. Its impact is multi-generational and the literacy levels of parents directly correlate to the K - 12 performances of their children. Our vision is to teach one generation to change the next. We believe our intensely relational method of providing educational opportunities through volunteer tutors and teachers in small classrooms or individual assistance works. Standing with adult students ready to provide encouragement, prayer, mentorship, and resources help adult students to persist in achieving their goals. Coming together for meals and creating a safe community also makes a difference in a student's ability to succeed.

Graduating students ultimately contribute to diminishing lives in poverty, and the self-sufficiency of community members will increase which, in turn, changes the lives of their families, and impacts society as a whole.
Short-term Success
We measure the number of graduates each year.

We measure HSE success by the number of Official Tests passed, which demonstrates individual progress in one of five subjects: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. ELL students graduate upon completing levels 1, 2, and 3 respectively and within each level, students must pass each curriculum unit with a score of 70%. Job/Computer skill metrics include the number of students who complete their 9-month coursework and are eligible for graduation.

Finally, Begin Anew measures the change in a student's self-sufficiency from enrollment to exit in order to monitor the impact a program has on a student's life. The self-sufficiency assessment looks at 11 areas of a student's life such as childcare, transportation, and housing.
Program Success Monitored By
Begin Anew celebrates two graduations each year. The average length of time for an adult student to complete ELL Level 1 training is approximately 12 months and longer if the student continues to advance through ELL Levels 2 and 3. The average HSE student takes approximately 18 months to complete their program of study, and learners going through Computer and Job Skills will take approximately 9 months.

Overall, Begin Anew reviews attendance and retention rates, self-sufficiency scores, and volunteer numbers in order to measure program success. Each program measures different success metrics in order to demonstrate forward progress toward graduation:
HSE - number of Official Practice Tests passed and receive an overall cumulative score of 45 on the state approved high school equivalency test
ELL - number of units achieved with a passing rate of 70% or more on the comprehensive unit test per Level 1, Level 2 , and Level 3
Job /Computer Skills - course completion

Transformational Next Steps!

Congrats to one of Nashville Campus' December 2022 graduates, Evelyn, on her acceptance to MTSU's nursing program! Evelyn started college January 2023 to work toward her new life goal of becoming a nurse.

Quote from Evelyn: "Even though my passage through Begin Anew was quick, it was very valuable for me. Taking the HiSET tests helped me and boosted my desire to study again. That's when I started thinking about college. I made some applications and got accepted. I chose the nursing course because the pandemic made me reflect on God's care for me. Repaying the care that I received will always remind me of where God brought me from."

Short-term Success
When students enroll in our programs, we immediately evaluate their' self-sufficiency by using a Self Sufficiency Matrix that evaluates their Community Credentials and 11 other essential areas that promote self-sufficiency: housing, employment, income, food, childcare, health care coverage, transportation, children's education, adult education, life skills, and family/social relations. The self-sufficiency evaluation occurs annually as long as students are enrolled. This provides us the opportunity to connect students with community resources and sets students up for success as they work toward earning their educational goals.

The GAIN assessment test, by Wonderlic, establishes an HSE student's baseline educational level, and Computer and Job Skill metrics include the number of students who complete their 9-month coursework. From here a student's journey begins in working toward achieving their educational goals!

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

The needs for adult education in our community are great - whether that is obtaining a high school equivalency degree, learning the English language or developing job/computer skills. What we do is the same - how we do what we do has changed.
We are able to provide on-line and in-person classes along with tutoring, mentoring, and Bible study. Going forward, this opens a new world of additional options for our adults learners to attend "virtually."
