Description
We believe a healthy community and healthy living go hand-in-hand. Due to transportation and financial barriers, many students in our communities are unable to participate in school-sanctioned sports. In order to meet this community need, we created Empower Sports: affordable, local sports leagues and wellness opportunities for youth. Similar to our model for out-of-school programming, we charge $25 per student per league in order to provide service with dignity. We currently offer flag football, basketball, and soccer leagues for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. In addition to Empower Sports, we seek to incorporate healthy living principles in our out-of-school programming. After school and throughout the summer, students have the opportunity to participate in yoga classes, urban gardening courses, cooking lessons, health fairs that teach about nutrition, exercise, disease and illness prevention, and more.

Description
Humphreys Street exists to employ and empower youth in order to develop leaders and provide pathways out of poverty. We accomplish this mission by employing students and young adults in underinvested South Nashville neighborhoods to create craft coffee and homemade body products. Students are hired after school to roast coffee, make soap, package products, participate in sales events, and work in our coffee shop as baristas, cashiers, back of house staff, and more. Alongside earning an income in a neighborhood where few positive economic opportunities exist, high school students employed at Humphreys Street gain local access to financial literacy training, mentoring, and career coaching.

Description
The primary way Harvest Hands furthers education in our communities is through out-of-school (after school and summer) programming. Our elementary and middle school out-of-school programs provide a safe place for students in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade to receive homework help, benefit from leadership development lessons and activities, receive mentoring and access to positive role models, and engage in arts, sports, and cultural activities. Concepts learned in school are reinforced through activities and games related to literacy, math, and STEM. Staff members, interns, and volunteers serve as mentors and create the stability, consistency, and structure that is lacking in many of our students' lives. We aim to raise up a generation of leaders from our neighborhood to make way for transformation in South Nashville.
