Description
Raise Your Hand partners with administrators and teachers to implement tutoring sessions in participating schools. Volunteer tutors work in the classroom after school helping teachers with first- through eighth-grade students struggling with reading and math. Teachers and volunteers partner to listen to and coach each child to success. Participation is completely free for students and includes snacks and transportation home.
Raise Your Hand serves students in Williamson County Schools, Franklin Special School District and Robertson County Schools as well as Cheatham, Dickson and Hickman. Tutoring sessions in Wilson County are forthcoming.

Read to Succeed is a comprehensive early childhood learning model that builds academic and social-emotional skills for children from birth through age five. Through Read to Succeed, children learn the skills they need to reach their highest potential. Core elements are: High-quality Classroom Environments; Qualified Instructional Coaches; Professional Development; Research-based Curricula; Regular Assessments; Parental Engagement; and Lending Libraries.

In partnership with the Governor's Early Literacy Foundation and the Dollywood Foundation, Imagination Library of Middle Tennessee delivers an age-appropriate, high-quality book each month straight to children's mailboxes at no cost to families. All children in Davidson, Williamson and Sumner counties, from birth to age five, are eligible. Books are personalized with the child's name and mailed directly to their home, making books exciting and inspiring a love for reading at an early age. United Way raises funds to support the cost of the books and to build awareness of this important program. Imagination Library of Middle Tennessee has distributed more than 500,000 books to 45,000 children throughout the region. Children who are read to regularly and early in life are better prepared for school. Ninety percent of physical brain development occurs in the first three years of life, when a baby forms more than one million new neural connections per second.

Together, we are ensuring families have a stable place to call home, food to eat and support in times of crisis. Our community is committed to providing coordinated, wrap-around services to stabilize our families and avoid future crisis. We partner with organizations through our Family Empowerment Program to help families experiencing homelessness?and those at-risk for homelessness?by helping them secure housing, find stability and plan for the future. Through partnerships with food banks, hot meal providers and meal delivery services, we're giving people access to high-quality, nutritious meals and bridging the gaps so that families are fed. We also provide a safety net for people in times of crisis to avoid foreclosure, utility cutoffs or repossession. By providing a singular database for our nonprofit network, we're able to pool funds to provide emergency financial assistance to make rent or mortgage payments, pay outstanding utility bills, satisfy medical debts and provide relief.

Our Family Empowerment Program helps to prevent and end homelessness. We also partner to help those without health insurance obtain affordable care and those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS receive essential support and services. We work with providers to help chronic disease sufferers receive the education and resources they need to manage their conditions so they can live healthy, productive lives. Our partners help individuals coping with mental health or substance abuse issues and provide wrap-around support and case management to ensure long-termsuccess. Through our Family Resource Center Partnerships and services, we help families make meaningful, lasting connections to those around them.

Through Imagination Library of Middle Tennessee, kids receive a free book in the mail regardless of their family's income every month from birth until age five. Our Read to Succeed program is a comprehensive early childhood learning model that builds literacy and social-emotional skills for preschoolers who need it most. We are determined to make sure our students make it to graduation and have a plan for continuing education, vocational training or career success. We give our students social and emotional education through their middle and high school years and provide opportunities for mentorship and support to help kids move onto adulthood with confidence.

The average taxpayer spends $273 to file their taxes each year. United Way volunteers prepare taxes at no cost for individuals and families earning less than $66,000 a year through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance free tax prep program. In addition, our professionally-trained financial counselors at the Financial Empowerment Center help clients manage bills, work through debt, establish and improve credit, create a budget, open a bank account and save for the future.
