CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

In 2022 we completed our next strategic plan to guide us into the next 3-5 years. We are focusing on broadening our board diversity to better reflect the communities we serve, to gain a deeper understanding of how racial, sexual and gender, and socio-economic facets of a person shape decision making, and to benefit from the myriad perspectives of all members. In doing so, we're also developing an Associate Board. This group of emerging leaders will lend vibrancy to our fundraising and community outreach efforts and help to cultivate the next generation of board leadership for years to come, while providing opportunities for young persons to experience board membership, non-profits, and pursue their passions. *******Learning Matters, Inc. became an organization in 2006 in response to an identified need in the Nashville community. The Executive Directors had been working in the for-profit sector providing the services of one-on-one teaching, assessment, and advocacy. The need for the availability of these same services to students without the financial means to afford them was evident. The Executive Director, the Board of Directors, and the team of experienced teachers are committed to the mission of bringing success in learning to students regardless of income level. Deb Kitchens and Christie Andrews were the principals in starting the corporation and Andrews continues to operate as the Executive Director. The corporation has grown quickly and the need for support staff became evident in 2007. An administrative assistant works full-time to help with office related tasks. The Board of Directors has been instrumental in ensuring that the corporation is well equipped to fulfill its mission. The Board of Directors has discussed at length the need for a development director to support donor relations, grant writing, communications and events with the hope of increasing the number of sliding scale students we serve. In April of 2014, the Board of Directors hired Learning Matters first development director. This addition to the staff will help ensure more students will be served through the Nashville Metro area during the upcoming school year. In September of 2015, the Board of Directors approved the hiring of an Assistant Director of Teaching upon recommendation from the Executive Director.
