Mission

Investing to build the pathways for future technology professionals by developing problem solvers and creative thinkers.

Background

In 2008, the Nashville Technology Council (NTC) began helping the local tech industry find qualified job applicants by forming relationships with area universities to guide curricula to meet local business needs. In 2013, the NTC created a 501(c)3 foundation named Turning the Tides of Technology. In 2015, the NTC received a $850K grant to raise student awareness of tech career opportunities through camps, tech industry field trips, a technology lending library, and internships. In 2015, the NTC also became the Nashville lead for President Obama's TechHire program, working to develop new ways to recruit and place applicants based on their actual skills and to create more fast track tech training opportunities. In 2016, the name of the foundation was changed to the NTC Foundation to better reflect our relationship with the NTC.

Impact

Accomplishments Summer Camps: During the summers of 2017 & 2018, the NTC hosted 17 one-week technology camps, enrolling a total of over 300 students in grades 3-12. To date, the camps have reached almost 900 students. A nine-week camp was attended by 24 high school students who traveled to 18 workplaces for on-site field trips that exposed them to technology workplace environments and cultures, as well as technology professionals. Student Field Trips: Thirty-seven different companies and colleges participated in 21 Traveling Tech Days throughout the year, bringing almost 300 middle and high school students and teachers to tech workplaces and campuses in Middle Tennessee. To date, nearly 1,100 students have experienced a NTC Traveling Tech Day. Computer Science Week: December 3-9, 2017, almost 2500 students across Davidson and Williamson counties participated in Hour of Code events, creating new interest in technology and coding. Students and teachers also learned about the variety and availability of technology careers in Middle Tennessee. A special thank you to the almost 90 industry professionals who volunteered their time to make Hour of Code possible for the NTC. Technology Lending Library: Over 18 months, over 2500 students have learned to program using our robots. Apprenti TN: In June 2018, the NTCF launched Apprenti TN, the first technology-focused registered apprenticeship program In Tennessee. Apprenti TN combines paid on-the-job training and education with placement in highly skilled, salary-competitive occupations. The program works with the tech industry to identify mid-tier jobs ready to be filled by highly-competent people - regardless of educational background. Apprenti TN will actively recruit women, minorities, and veterans to aid in diversifying the tech industry, but everyone is eligible and encouraged to apply.Goals for 2018 1. Train and place the first three cohorts of apprentices (~100 placements)2. Increase hiring partners from 15 to 25 local employers3. Hire dedicated staff for Apprenti TN program management4. Raise $250,000 to support training for apprentices 5. Continue executing all self-funded education programs
