Mission

The Nashville Pipes and Drums formed in 1984 and is dedicated to advancing the great tradition of Scottish music and culture in the region through education, public performance, and competition.

Background

The Nashville Pipes and Drums has been Middle Tennessee's premier bagpipe band since 1984. The band exists to preserve and grow the musical tradition of the Great Highland Bagpipe and Scottish drumming in Nashville. We draw on the rich cultural heritage of Scotland's national instrument and Scottish military pipe bands. We are passionate about fostering interest in this tradition and provide a robust program of free lessons. Our classes are taught by volunteer instructors from our band, who represent some of the best players in our region.

Impact

Some of our members have been in the program for 30+ years and some have just started. Fellowship, a framework of lifelong learning, pursuit of excellence, public performance, teaching others... these are the valuable individual impacts to all students and band members.

We impact the larger community with our public performances, effecting hundreds to thousands of people locally and abroad. While abroad, we represent our community... as the Nashville Pipes and Drums.

Needs

Our needs for instrument and uniform purchase and maintenance continue to be a focus of the money we receive. 2023 has brought 14 new members to the bands at just under $700 each. We would love to cover 100% of uniform costs, but cannot at present. Instruments have the same challenges... Bagpipes start at $1400 with maintenance in the $200-400 range annually. Drums are similar at $1250 for drum, case, and carrier with $100-300 annual maintenance.

Continued growth!!! More students... We need to offer in school or after-school programs for students in the 5th or higher grades We need those classes sanctioned by public/private schools. We need funding for teachers to offer those classes. More funds to offer camp scholarships to our students during summer months. More funds for travel to Dunedin, FL, Chicago, IL, Pleasanton, CA, and/or Maxville, ON for greater competitions. Currently, we're only capable of making Chicago happen.

Board Chair Statement

Nashville continues to grow at an amazing pace and our group benefits from increased exposure. Through that growth, we've built an infrastructure of talented individuals relocated to the Nashville area from Houston, the Carolinas, Minnesota... and we need assistance getting those folks integrated into the Greater Nashville communities as music instructors for the Great Highland Bagppipe and Scottish Drumming. Our mission continues to be providing free community classroom instruction on these instruments. We think the assistance required is simply getting the message out to more Nashville parents.

Help us continue to grow with Nashville. We'll use funds to increase the number of class offerings, as well as purchase and maintain instruments and uniforms for the students that become performing members of the band.
