Mission

The Davidson County Mental Health and Veterans Court Assistance Foundation exists to support the work of two valuable and innovative treatment courts. These two specialty courts restore lives by providing structure, treatment, monitoring, mentoring, and transitional housing as an alternative to incarceration. Through these programs, veterans in distress and clients living with mental health challenges are able to reassert control over their lives, reconnect with their families, and reenter mainstream society. The Courts support these clients. The Foundation supports the Courts.

Background

Growing numbers of veterans returning from service face specific mental challenges as a result of fighting to defend our nation in an evolving and dangerous world. The Davidson County Mental Health and Veterans Assistance Foundation was established in 2014 to support the programs of the Davidson County Mental Health Court and the Veteran's Court. These specialty courts are working to meet the specific needs of the men and women who have served our country and returned with challenges as a result of their experiences in difficult circumstances. When we consider their unique conditions, the methods by which we strive to return them to full societal participation are crucial. The Davidson County Veterans Court utilizes innovated and personalized methods to give each veteran a new chance at a stable and productive life. Through a structured program administered by the court, eligible veterans find stability and new purpose to contribute to the community. Benefits offered to assist veterans include mental health evaluation, alcohol/substance abuse assistance and supervision by client specialists assigned to work on their particular needs.

Impact

Since its inception, the Foundation has provided treatment, monitoring, mentoring, and transitional housing to more than 75 veterans. Most excitingly, the program continues to maintain a 4% recidivism rate.

Needs

Financial support is the top need for the Foundation. Funds are used to cover the cost of programming such as therapy appointments, inpatient treatment, housing costs, drug and alcohol screenings and other needs to help rehabilitate participants in the court program.
