Mission

The Episcopal School of Nashville, a diverse, urban, independent school, is dedicated to nurturing the joy of learning and the spirit of discovery in each of its students.

Background

The Episcopal School of Nashville (ESN) is a Pre-Kindergarten through 8th-grade independent day school in East Nashville, Tennessee, affiliated with the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and accredited though the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) in 2023. ESN opened its doors in the fall of 2015 to 16 students in two modular buildings in the parking lot of St. Ann's Episcopal Church. ESN quickly outgrew its original location, starting with combined Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten and 1st/2nd grade classes and adding a grade level each subsequent year. In the summer of 2019, ESN moved the short distance from St. Ann's to the historic Ross School on Ordway Place, which helped the school successfully navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to grow. Following a successful six-year tenure, Harrison Stuart was succeeded by Dr. James Jordan in July 2021. Since the summer of 2021, the school has grown from 107 to over 150 students. In 2023, ESN celebrated its first graduating 8th-grade class and its inaugural accreditation through the Southern Association of Independent Schools.

Impact

At the Episcopal School of Nashville, we teach students to know themselves, their community, and how to be changemakers. Our intentionally inclusive and diverse community is informed by our Episcopal identity, and is composed of over 150 students from 24 Nashville area zip codes.

While our tuition is set at a considerate rate below $15,000, we understand the financial challenges many families encounter in Nashville, and we strive to create access for all families. Almost 40% of our students benefit from our need-based financial aid program, which, proportionally is one of the most generous in the city. This year, we allocated $650,000 in need-based aid, ensuring that a quality education remains within reach for those who aspire to it.

Our academic results underscore our commitment to excellence. With 94% of our students reading at or above the 50th percentile on national tests, 88% meeting math benchmarks, and over 70% meeting their individual growth targets, we're proud of what we've achieved and we want to serve even more families. One important point to note is that 100% of our third graders read at or above the 50th percentile.

In the spring of 2023, a significant moment in our journey was marked. ESN celebrated its first graduating class, a proud testament to our dedication and hard work. These well-prepared graduates have taken their next steps at Father Ryan HS, Girls Preparatory School (Chattanooga), Nashville School for the Arts, and Hillsboro HS.

Needs

Our greatest needs are for need-based financial aid. This year, we have awarded over $650,000 in aid to almost 40% of our students receive aid to make attending ESN feasible. We also have technology, infrastructure, and program/professional development-related needs.
