Mission

Music Health Alliance's mission is to Heal the Music by providing access to healthcare with services that PROTECT, DIRECT & CONNECT music professionals with medical and financial solutions. MHA is music's solution for healthcare access and resources.

Background

In 2006, Tatum Allsep, Music Health Alliance's founder, began documenting the music industry's need for healthcare support, especially for those with pre-existing conditions, mounting medical bills and insufficient health insurance. After years of research and development, MHA was officially launched in January of 2013, providing the music industry with a new model of healthcare support that removes the profit motive from healthcare and health insurance, while providing a wide range of healthcare resource options to an exposed and vulnerable demographic. This unique concept allows the focus of the healthcare solution to be based solely on the client and their specific needs in a safe and trusted environment amongst an experienced staff that understands the complexities of the creative environment. In addition to over 125 years of combined music industry experience, our staff is licensed, certified and experienced in the areas of health insurance, patient navigation, senior care, and Federal/state health programs.MHA's mission and services are centered around the acquisition of access to healthcare for music professionals of all genres and income levels across the nation. There is no other organization in the US that brings health insurance into the patient navigation/healthcare continuum. Health insurance and one's actual healthcare are seen as completely separate entities. Other health related programs begin when there is a specific healthcare issue and deal with the healthcare protection that exists or does not. By removing the profit motive and combining the two needs, protection/cost management and healthcare, MHA is able to objectively assess a family's whole healthcare need and recommend a solution. Our services are based on the facts of the current US healthcare and health insurance systems and law. We do not enable our clients by spoon feeding or handling every detail. We use these facts to guide our clients through the system so they are not alone, learning as they go. We have found that music professionals are empowered by knowledge and the positive outcomes we have experienced offer the potential of a longer career and pathway to living well. MHA has created a solution to meet the immense and growing need for healthcare access, translation and navigation in the music industry. The results are now measurable documenting exactly how MHA is generating healthcare access for a predominantly uninsured and vulnerable demographic.

MHA's services are also confidential, safe and available to all facets of the industry, all genres of music and all levels of income to Heal the Music.

Needs

Why should a foundation or donor care about the mission of Music Health Alliance? Despite the perceived prosperity of our industry, fame does not always equal fortune, and more than 76% of the music industry has no access to group benefits or HR departments. The percentage of music professionals without adequate health insurance and access to healthcare is significantly higher than the national average. In addition, symphonies nationwide state that their #1 problem and cost is player injury. Because there is a deficit in protection against illness and injury among music professionals, there is a crisis management norm that exists when a healthcare need arises. Unfortunately, this has become a unique and perpetual cycle within the music industry impacting the longevity of careers and the vitality of the industry. MHA has created an evidenced based solution to solve this growing problem and to heal the music that heals us every day. Why is this important? Because the music our industry is making each day has an impact much greater than a chart position or ticket sales. This music is helping Kenneth, a stroke survivor, learn to speak again, and giving Deanna, a fourteen year-old with cancer, a reason to keep fighting.

CEO Statement

MHA has secured over $107 million in financial resources to meet the healthcare needs of our industry and keep the music playing. I am so honored to be a part of this incredible organization. We have made a positive difference in the lives of over 20,000 music professionals and their families. The MHA staff has been selfless and completely dedicated to our mission. Our Board of Directors and Advisory Board believed in what was only an idea when we came to each of them requesting guidance, and our results prove that our process model is working and the music industry has an immense need for the services we provide. Truthfully, MHA's client stories are the best way to understand how our services truly Heal the Music. . . Joey, a musician, was uninsured with a brain tumor that needed to be removed. He was told that he had few options. MHA helped him gain affordable health insurance to cover his surgery and negotiated down his medical bills to meet his budget. He is now touring again.James suffered a closed head trauma in a motorcycle accident. He required multiple brain surgeries and he had no health insurance. MHA helped James qualify for financial aid and navigate all of the medical bills arriving from 10 different sources. James largest medical bill was reduced to a zero balance and by staying on top of his medical bills he was able to maintain good credit.Lucy, a high profile performer, was recently diagnosed with memory loss and his family had no idea where to turn or what to do. They had become prisoners in their own home. MHA developed a plan of action for the family to help navigate their way through the questions they were being faced with on a daily basis.Rick, an event producer, needed back surgery, but wanted no part of "Obamacare." MHA used the facts to explain his options with no political persuasion. Rick now has affordable health coverage and his surgery out of pocket expenses have been reduced by 83%. MHA Also helped him negotiate down previously existing medical bills to an affordable rate.Jamie was married to a songwriter who passed away. She was unsure where to turn or who to trust to answer her many healthcare questions. MHA gave her a safe place to go and answered her questions based on the facts of the law and the needs of her family. She and her children are protected and she has peace of mind knowing that she is not alone when it comes to her healthcare needs. Together we will continue to Heal the Music! Please feel free to contact MHA if you or someone you know can benefit from our services.

Board Chair Statement

Music Health Alliance experienced a landmark first decade. MHA was named Tennessee's Healthcare Innovator of the Year, a very prestigious honor for a start-up non-profit organization. MHA sees an average of 80 new clients a week with needs that range from simple healthcare navigation to serious health crisis intervention. MHA's confidential services are provided by a carefully selected staff whose careers include over 125 years of music industry experience. This industry experience provides comfort to clients because MHA understands the career paths they have chosen to follow. To follow are a few examples of how MHA is accomplishing it's mission on a daily basis: A Grammy winner with Parkinson's was reusing disposable diapers and living on rice to pay for his medication. MHA helped him get his medication at no cost using the benefits that he already had in place through the VA and Medicare. He now has an extra $2,500 a month to cover his living expenses.Tammy was battling cancer for the 2nd time and had a number of outstanding bills from her first encounter with the C-word. MHA helped her gain access to financial aid to pay her past and present medical bills, navigate her current healthcare coverage and find other resources to cover additional medical needs.Eric is a rising young producer and like many young and healthy Americans, he had no health insurance. He came to MHA to help find the best health coverage for the least amount of money. As a producer, his income varies from month to month and does not fit the requested income questions asked by healthcare.gov. Healthcare.gov representatives also gave Eric incorrect information. MHA was able to translate Eric's income using his past tax returns and projected annual income to create a formula that would fit into the required healthcare.gov boxes. Eric qualified for both tax subsidies and cost sharing reductions, and he has a monthly premium that is affordable. Both Eric and his future bride are very happy that he was introduced to MHA.This is how MHA is Healing the Music on a daily basis.
