Mission

The mission of Abintra Montessori School is to assist in the development of the individual child and adolescent by providing a quality education based on Montessori principles and philosophy.

Background

For over 40 years, Abintra Montessori School has been providing an early childhood, elementary, and adolescent education process grounded in respect for the individual child and the belief that children have an internal motivation to exercise and develop their mental, physical, and emotional abilities.

Today, Abintra continues to serve as a quality educational home to more than 130 children and adolescents (ages 2.5-14) on its 11-acre campus. Believing in the uniqueness of each child and trusting in the child's inherent wisdom, the school holds one central purpose: To assist each child as they develop and perfect their own capabilities. Toward this end, the school provides thoughtfully prepared learning environments across all classrooms, a diverse community of fellow learners, a beautiful and well-maintained campus, qualified and dedicated Montessori teaching professionals, programs offering parental education/support and involvement opportunities, partnership-driven administrative staff, and a committed Board of Trustees to oversee the integrity of the school as a whole.

Meaning 'from within,' Abintra exemplifies Dr. Maria Montessori's educational continuum: follow the child's lead, observe to know the child's needs, prepare the learning environment, support the child's effort, respect the child's individuality . . . trust in the child's inner workings.

Impact

Vision: Abintra develops confident, self-motivated learners who creatively meet the challenges of life.
The work of Montessori in the world is to give students a framework for understanding their place and responsibilities within the larger context of life on earth. This begins by cultivating respectful behavior, self-discipline, and self-direction. A student is seen as a capable, productive member of the school with responsibilities to the community. It is the job of the community to never do for individuals what they can accomplish on their own and to teach that cooperatively the community can achieve more than the individual. It was Montessori's belief that by understanding other cultures, beliefs, and values a peaceful world was possible.

Needs

1. Establish and grow dedicated annual tuition assistance for families.
2. Provide further-reaching parent education about Montessori and Positive Discipline to the Nashville community.
3. Establish more funding for high-quality Montessori, environmental, art-based, and SEL Professional Development that can also be shared with other Montessori or Independent Schools.

CEO Statement

Since the inception of Abintra the Board of Trustees has operated a fiscally sound school. The school offers competitive wages, health and liability insurance, as well as a retirement plan for all full-time employees. The school is continually in the process of self-evaluation and is run according to its mission and strategic goals. Strategic planning is conducted with the input of students, parents, community members, alumnae, and donors. In the 35 years since its inception, this planning has enabled Abintra to purchase a campus, renovate two existing buildings, and build three additional buildings to serve a population of 150 students. Commitment to this school has led donors to make these expansions possible through capital giving, the donation of an additional six acres, and creation of an endowment for the school. The work of the administrator supports our mission of assisting in the development of the individual child and adolescent. This means knowing the children individually and supporting the work of parents and teachers. Abintra believes that all children are born learning, that parents are primary teachers, and that child, parent, and school form a triangle for education. Abintra does not discriminate against the speed or style of learning of a child. The community is made up of students who are typically developing, developmentally delayed, and advanced. The foundation of our school is a respect for ourselves, others, and the environment. A 3-year-old child's work in the community is as important as the work of the administrator. It means that each member of this community is significant and able to contribute. This job ensures that everyone understands and embodies this belief. The director is to strengthen the programs, policies, and administrative work as well as ensure adequate financial resources with minimum reliance on tuition increases, while maintaining an attractive, safe, healthful, and efficient campus.
