Mission

The Metro Historical Commission Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit friends group which assists the Metro Historical Commission in its efforts to identify, protect, study, and interpret the rich history of Nashville.

Background

The Metro Historical Commission Foundation was created in 2012 and received its 501(c)(3) status in 2016. It was formed as a friends group to the Metro Historical Commission to help identify, study and protect certain aspects of Nashville History in collaboration with the Metro Historical Commission.

Impact

The MHCF continues to assist descendants of numerous Davidson County families (Gower, Raines, Compton-Sirls, and others) in restoring historic family cemeteries, as well as other historic cemeteries. MHFC has been the lead sponsor in the development, funding, and launch of the Nashville Sites website which provides self-guided audio tours of historic spots in Nashville. MHCF has contributed to the funding of such disparate projects as archaeology and the cultural landscape record at Ft. Negley, to DNA research of slave families at Grassmere, and to Friends of Shelby Park in the preservation strategy for an important historic building in the park. MHCF has also assisted victims of the 2020 March tornadoes who live in historic areas and homes. MHCF is partnering with The DISTRICT, Inc., to raise money for the preservation of buildings damaged in the Christmas Day bombing in the Second Avenue Historic District.

Needs

We are always in need of monetary donations to assist us in the vital preservation work we do in the Metropolitan Davidson County area. As a friends group, we can bridge gaps in the budget of the Metro Historical Commission.

Board Chair Statement

Historic preservation is so much more than an abstraction or aesthetics. It is a key factor in neighborhood revitalization, community development, tourism, housing variety, good urban design, downtown vitality, community pride. Nashville is fortunate to have had the Metro Historical Commission since 1966 to provide expertise and vision in applying best preservation practices to all of these desirable city components. Like all city agencies, the MHC has needs beyond the budget allocated to it by Metro government. So the MHC Foundation has been stepping in for the past few years to meet some of those needs. In addition, the Foundation can assist community groups assembling funds for specific preservation projects, such as historic cemeteries.
