Description
The Build Up Foundation Free ACT Prep to economically disadvantage students in Metro Nashville Public Schools (Title IV). Most of the students in the economically challenged areas families cannot afford to pay for college. Often they are first generation college students, which also plays a factor in parents not having the knowledge of ACT testing/scores. The schools they attend do not always have the resources to provide additional test taking strategies to these students as needed. The families are unable to afford act prep classes, which in most cases are very expensive. We believe this leaves the students at a disadvantage along with other challenges in life. We generally have 75 to 100 kids sign up for each prep session. We average about 300 to 400 kids a year (including grades 5th thru 12th). Our program numbers include 95% of kids in Title IV Metro Schools, which serve low-income families. The goal of this program is help build a pipeline to Free college for families in need.
Program Successes
The program has experienced continued growth and much success. 80 % of the students who attend all four sessions see improvement of their scores with a minimum of 3 points in most cases. 75% of our seniors are qualified/and or registered to attend college. They are eligible for funding from the various programs, mainly the Tennessee Lottery Scholarships. Our on board staff helps families with College registration, as well as financial aid application processes. In 2020 several of our students have already received college scholarships. Our middle school students have gained more knowledge and practice experience so they are better prepared when the times come to take the official test. Many parents notice an increase in grades and test scores from students in their normal classes after attending our program. Several metro school principals, counselors, teachers, and coaches are recommending our program to their students. Overall our students are better prepared to attend College.

Long-term Success
We will provide Free ACT Prep classes that include proper test taking strategies for students in hopes to improve their scores for college entry and scholarship qualification opportunities. Also by providing these services to middle school students they are better prepared to do well on the test in years to come. This process will directly help to increase the average ACT scores of students in Metro Nashville Public Schools that are currently below the National average according to ACT data comparisons. Also helping to cover fees for families in need allows students to take the test multiple times if needed, for a chance at better results on the exam.
Short-term Success
By the end of our 4 week course most students see at least a three point increase in scores. Covering test fees for these students also helps with the burden of families struggling to pay for the exam, and allows these students the ability to take the test multiple times for better scores in the future. Our younger students are receiving an increase in awareness of the ACT Test earlier in life, so they may be better prepared for the test when it's time for them to take the test. We generally have 75 to 100 kids sign up for each prep session. We average about 300 to 400 kids a year (including grades 5th thru 12th). Our program numbers include 95% of kids in Title IV Metro Schools, which serve low-income families. We currently accept all students in the Metro Nashville area because our goal is to Build Up the entire community. In the last 18 months the Build Up Foundation has provided ACT Prep and College Readiness to about 600 students.
Program Success Monitored By
Our program is monitored by recording the data of test scores from students prior to receiving our services and their scores after receiving our services. Most students see an increase in scores immediately on their next test. Most of our students are first generation college students, and helping them to register and apply for aid with their parents will increase the number of students from economically challenged areas attending college with proper funding. By providing the services to middle school kids in the program, success will be monitored by the increase in ACT scores in Metro Nashville Public Schools (Title IV) students in the future who currently are attending our program. The goal of this program is help build a pipeline to Free College for families in need by providing them with test taking strategies.
