Description
The Travellers Rest property is on land where a Native American village stood more than 700 years ago. Archeological excavations and radiocarbon dating of artifacts suggest that the site was a prehistoric Mississippian era village dating from as early as 1270 - 1316 AD. The village, which was occupied for 200+ years until sometime before 1499, is filled with numerous unmarked human burial sites that are sacred to Native Americans.

Because of the high number of Native burials on the grounds, decisions regarding future facilities expansions will be directly affected by the proximity of proposed projects to human remains. A comprehensive site map of the property utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar will identify and confirm the location of every Native American burial on the grounds, and inform decisions about future projects that involve groundbreaking, digging, drilling or other soil disturbances that could impact the final resting places of deceased individuals.

Public programs include the Trades Festival. An event geared to area students, but also open to the general public, that showcases the trades of 18th & 19th century artisans. Twisted Tennessee: Two Sides to Every Tale is our October seasonal program that focuses on stories of the weird and mysterious. Guests move through a series of vignettes, hearing two sides to each mysterious story and finish at our Two Tales Tavern where they vote on who was telling the truth. Twelfth Night at Historic Travellers Rest celebrates the Christmas season. Visitors experience the house decorated in early 19th century fashion and hear the traditions of Twelfth Night and Christmas for both the Overtons and those they enslaved. History & Whiskey is like a field trip for grown-ups! Adults can try their hand at quill pen writing and interact with a number of period artisans...and best of all sample some whiskey! Included in public programs are also symposiums, workshops, lectures, and living history programs.

Description
Historic house tours reveal and interpret the story of Travellers Rest. That story began with the land and the Native Americans who settled here around 1,000 years ago, but also includes the story of John Overton and his descendants, the enslaved population who labored and lived here, and the overall history of Nashville. The historic house, the oldest home open to the public in Nashville, tells the story of Travellers Rest's place in Nashville's history from 1799 through the Civil War through the lens of the Overtons and their enslaved workers.
