CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Sycamore was established in November 2015 and operated as a subsidiary of The Healing Trust (THT) for its first year. THT committed $2.5 million in a 5-year operating grant structured to cover the full expenses of the organization for the first 3 years. In 2019 and 2020, the commitment converts to a 2:1 matching grant. In 2018 we raised the $250,000 needed to draw the full $500,000 in 2019. We have shifted our focus to 2019 fundraising needed to draw down 2020 funding and to long-term sustainability. The intent of the grant structure was to enable the brand new organization to launch and get on its feet as a trusted source of non/bipartisan public policy analysis before facing significant fundraising demands. As a result, in its first few years, The Sycamore Institute was able to focus on hiring the right people, building the right board, producing high-quality research, and building its reputation. Now, the organization has successfully produced a significant body of research and established its unique non/bipartisan niche and can more easily demonstrate its value to donors and the issues and other nonprofits they care about in their communities.
